Tequila

Post by Paul Papanek »

Just trying to settle a discussion. Does anyone know of a cover of The Champ's "Tequila" that includes PSG?

Thanks in advance...

That would be a really old pedal steel, since I beleive that song came out in 1958.

I've heard it done at steel shows a few times, but it's not very popular on pedal steel due to it's simplicity. There was a non-pedal steel version of it on one of Herb Remington's albums titled "Then and Now".

My band does a fair amount of bluegrass instrumentals and I do a verse and chorus of "Tequila" in the middle of "Arkansas Traveler" - to a train beat no less. When the B section II-V-I break comes around which I play with "power chords",the crowd invariably shouts "Tequila!" - we use that for a launching pad to jump into OBS.
I could never see doing the whole song seriously because there's not enough to it but it's kind fun to qoute it for a silly minute, get the good out of it and move on. Plus it usually prompts someone to send up a round of shots of guess what..... -MJ-

Don't remind me.
I was playing with Gus Hardin in Tulsa, and late at night, somebody lined the rail with shots of tequila, and we were obliged to drink them all. I have never been able to drink it sence. Since, that is, due to my lack of sense.
Long live The Champs.

Now I've got a picture in my head of Pewee Herman doing his table dance...

Paul Franklin performed it
one year at ISGC in St Louis.

I'm not sure if he has recorded it, but
it may be worthwhile to check his catalog.

I agree that it's fun to quote but probably can't hold it's own for very long.

It's a catchy melody though - it would be interesting to completely reharmonize it and play it as a mid-tempo loungy swing.

Maybe another lesson for Jeffs Jazz.

Arlen Roth and Danny Gatton recorded a great over-the-top romp through Tequilla on Roth's CD called "Toolin' Around".

During the summer months, I play at a place on the Lake of the Ozarks called "Tequillaville". Guess what song we start the show with????? I'll give you 3 guesses and the last 2 don't count.
That reminds me. I had the pleasure of working some with the guitar player who played on the "Champs" record. None other than Dale Norris, a fine guitar player who played a Gibson Birdland.
