I have had many of them in stock over the years. All were wood necks.'74-'88. Good guitars, in most ways.

My friend and fellow forumite Carl Dvorcek here in Jacksonville has a D-12 that he plays regularly. I have played the guitar, it has the great classic Sho-Bud tone.

I just bought an S-12 Sho~Bud and was curious. I like Double necks so I'll see how extended E9 goes for me. My friend has a D-12 and I think its just a matter of getting used to the extra strings. Should have it today from UPS(shudder) if all goes well. What models did they make them in? (for example Professional D-12 .....Pro 2 D-12 etc ) Thanks. Image

Every D12 that I've seen has been a ProII. To my knowledge, Sho-Bud never offered a D12 ProIII, or Prof. But anything's possible...they were always making custom stuff.

A friend of mine has a Sho-Bud SD12 with a metal neck, and it's the only 12 string Bud I've ever seen with a metal neck.

From the 1975 Sho~Bud (Gretsch) catalogue: Note that the B/W photos show the endplate and undercarriage of a D-10, not a D-12, with 2R/1L changer and 2-hole pullers.

Duane, you may have very well seen a picture of Jeff Newman playing a Sho Bud D12. The first time that I ever met Jeff, sometime around 1967 or 68, he was playing a Sho Bud Fingertip D12.

Those pictures also show a row of screws to adjust the lower return springs. That is not on my D-12. the only way to adjust those springs is to use a different spring.

A friend of mine had a rosewood D-12 fingertip that I had the pleasure of playing many times. He regretfully passed on some years ago. Hadn't seen him in a while, don't know what became of it. A very nice looking and to my recollection, fine sounding guitar as well

Earnest,
re: the adjustable return springs: in the 1975 catalogue/leaflet, all the steels where the endplates can be seen, show adjustable springs. The tuning windows seem to have the same size as on the older models with 1R/1L changers. The 2R/1L changer can use the same window. The 2R/2L changer may need a bigger window, I don't know. The description of the steels isn't really clear: sometimes a "double raise & double lower" changer is mentioned, sometimes it says "double raise & lower". Anyway, the adjustable return springs were soon exchanged for non-adjustable ones, probably right after these photos were taken. It saved assembly time and work on the endplates. My '75 LDG has non-adjustable springs.

Note that all the steels still have the wide pedals, even the Maverick - soon to be replaced by the narrow slick pedals. It's interesting that The Pro~III, The Pro~II and The Pro~I have the CUSTOM label, while the 12 string models and The Professional S-10 do not.

All pickups don't have the later support spacers yet, but they are not coil-tapped any more. All in all the catalogue raises more questions than it answers. Sho~Bud quality control at its best! Image

Sorry for highjacking this thread, and Merry Christmas to all,
Rainer

I think it's not too awfully hard to go from D-10 to D-12 as long as you don't get too rigid in you thinking. I have an Emmons D-12 p/p that wasn't too hard to get a handle on really (sure made D-10s look puny). On the extended E9th you had two lower pitched strings below the 10th string B, which were G# and E (the E being like the 6th on regular guitar). But you know what, I set the 11th string to A instead of G# because I could do more with it. Weird?

Hey Mark, did that S-12 show up, and if so how do you like it???

Rainer, Not that it makes any difference but my dbl 12 THE PRO-11 has the Custom decal. Wonder why? I like the brochure. <font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Kenny Foy on 24 December 2005 at 10:45 AM.]</p></FONT><font size="1" color="#8e236b"><p align="center">[This message was edited by Kenny Foy on 24 December 2005 at 10:46 AM.]</p></FONT>

Sometimes I'm just as dumb as a brick! Even though Jeff Newman's name was mentioned twice in this thread, I didn't make the connection to his Sho~Bud course from 1969. He's playing a D-12 Fingertip on the cover:
