The other thing that rocks about the USA is that we can disagree without blowing each other's heads off, that is, unless we feel like it. At least we are prepared, should we make the choice to own guns and use them. Everybody wins, right?
Dave Grafe- regarding your quote:
"Fact: Australia and England have recently banned virtually ALL types of firearms and the violent crime rates in both countries are now triple those in the USA and rising."
No offense intended, but did your "fact" come from American Handgunner (one of the souces that came up with it when I Googled "violent crime rate australia england)?...
I ask because we have 6 times more population in the USA than England- there'd be no one left to shoot over there if there was 3 times the amount of violent crime (we are at 22 per 1000, according to the US government- this would put Merry Olde at 66 per 1000. That would make almost 7% of English citizens violent offenders... Logic tells me I am smelling something ain't right in that "fact".)

I generally believe that there are "lies, damnable lies and statistics" but I was struck by something I read on the NRA web site:
"In the United States, firearms are used as often as 2.5 million times each year in self defense, in the vast majority of cases without a shot being fired. Best estimates reveal that firearms are used three to five times more often for defensive purposes than for criminal acts."
That means two things:
-- If you do feel the need to pull a gun in self defense, the odds are very, very low that you'll have to pull the trigger (elsewhere the NRA says that only 1 percent of the criminals are wounded, and .1 percent are killed);
and
-- The odds are strongly in your favor that the person you're protecting yourself against doesn't have a gun.
Still, I don't choose to carry, or even own a gun. (It looks like Howard is doing a good job of keeping gunmakers in business w/o my help!) Thats because of another set of statistics, these from the website of the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence:
"For every time a gun is used in a home in a legally-justifiable shooting [note that every self-defense is legally justifiable] there are 22 criminal, unintentional, and suicide-related shootings.
"The presence of a gun in the home triples the risk of homicide in the home.
"The presence of a gun in the home increases the risk of suicide fivefold."
The way I read the data, my family and I are probably safer without any guns -- but that's my choice to make.

A battery powered stun gun is a lot less likely to put you behind bars if you have to use it.
Granted it's no good in a shootout, but all you need to do is get close enough to reach out and touch someone. And the recipient will make a full recovery, but not until you've had plenty of time to get out of Dodge. I've seen one used in a crowded bar and hardly anyone even noticed.
You can zap the badguy, and then pretend it's a cellphone and you're calling 911 to come and help the guy who "fainted". Just don't hit the button while you're holding it up to your ear . .

My two favorite topics - GUNS and GUITARS!
I've always enjoyed shooting as a sport and have carried a weapon for personal safety when necessary, BUT I would NEVER carry a gun to the stage. I MIGHT BE TEMPTED TO SHOOT THE DRUMMER! Or the SOUNDMAN - FOR SURE!
And I usually play in CHURCH!

All these anti-USA responses make me appreciate the fact that we can still have guns. Never know when we're gonna need them just to keep the few last freedoms we still do have. Say what you want, that's another right you and I still have. There's enough of us that believe in the right to bare arms that taking them away from us won't be easy. I am fully convinced that one day those that don't like guns will try to force their believes on all. God bless the USA!!!

(okay, I promised to stay out of this, but...) This is absolutely incredible!! A few people here, some from the US, me from Norway, and Archie from Scotland, has the nerve to raise a few questions regarding your 'gun culture', and now we're being accused of being anti-USA and not knowing about human rights? You really are touchy, aren't you.........an individual who knows apsolutly nothing about human rights.

John,- quite seriously I have absolutely no problems with your side-line business, in fact I thought it was beautiful work!
Over here we have a long and proud tradition of crafting knives and their 'holsters' that goes along with our traditional and historical costumes ("bunader"). But we're not allowed to carry those knives wherever we please, and I am glad for that.
That doesn't mean I don't appreciate the value of the history and the craft behind such things.

It's too bad we just can't carry some of those rocked prepelled grenades launchers. I'd love to be on stage when someone got pissed off and went for it. What a show, or better yet just take half the crowd out from the bandstand. Why worry about a paultry little pistol that only makes little holes. I see it all the time on the news and I thank who ever is in charge we don't have to deal with that.
I couldn't get into playing if I had to worry about pullin a gun. In fact without this post I'm not even sure I would have thought about it!
I thought I could take this so I have read to here. I'm not proud of some of the responses here.
[This message was edited by W Franco on 05 February 2005 at 09:37 PM.]

Anybody that's trained in the proper use of firearms isn't going to pull out a gun just because of an argument. It's only justifiable to use it when your life is in danger period. As for the stun guns, my wife stunned a real character in the bar we owned once and he pulled out a knife. The man a was a bonafide lunatic. She was nice about and only shot him in the leg. The cops came and took the guy away and never arrested my wife. Guns don't kill people. People kill people and with a lot more than just guns. Her own son was killed was by a stabbing in his own home. If he'd had a gun I doubt it would've turned out that way.

for Stephen,
that is a message for someone who thinks that our rights and the constitution of our country sucks. As a man ,I`d rather walk around with a gun than in a dress.I have no problem with anti gun people,it is their right to hate guns, but I have a problem when they tell me in the face that something I appreciate and care for sucks. That is rude and disrespectful if you ask me.You don`t just show up in somebodys house and tell them the way they live and things they charrish suck.
Db
btw
John, that is some beautiful work.I didn`t have idea you can do that.Way cool.

Notice how every time the sheriff & deputy are gone from town,
a bunch of steel pickin', totters come on in & get the town all riled up
wait till sheriff Lee gets back, he got the twister
or maybe you gonna get one cold
& someone's gonna have to bury ya'
