Anyone have the chord sequence for Crazy?

Post by Bob Mainwaring »

It might have been done before - and I know there`s another thread on the title, but our singer/rhythm guy is adamant about there being a certain chord progression which to my big ears is missing a whole lot of minors.
Could anyone out there give it out in the key of "D" in chord symbols instead of the Nashville system.
I`m all eyes and ears!!!!

Many thanks.

Well, I think it was originally written in C and C#, as it modulates.
Here's how I would write it out in D to Eb (I've also included the numbers):

I I VI7 VI7 II- II- II- II-
D D B7 B7 Em Em7 Em7 Em7
Crazy, Crazy for feelin' so lonely.........
V7 V7 V7 V7 I bIIdim II- V7
A7 A7 A7 A7 D D#dim Em A7
I'm crazy, crazy for feelin' so blue
I I VI7 VI7 II- II- II- II-
D D B7 B7 Em Em7 Em7 Em7
I knew you'd love me as long as you wanted
V7 V7 V7 V7 I IV I I7
A7 A7 A7 A7 D G D D7
And then some day, you'd leave me for somebody new
IV IV IV IV I I I7 I7
G G G G D D D7 D7
Worry, why do I let myself worry?
II7 II7 II7 II7 V7 II-7 V7 V7
E7 E7 E7 E7 A7 E7 A7 A7
Wond'ring what in the world did I do?
I I VI VI I- II-(M7) II-7 II-7
D D B7 B7 Em Em(M7) Em7 Em7
Crazy for thinking that my love could hold you
IVM7 III-7 II-7 IM7
GM7 F#m7 Em7 DMaj7
I'm crazy for trying and crazy for crying
II-7 V7 I V# (Modulation! V# is V of the new key, Eb)
Em7 A7 D Bb
And I'm crazy for loving you

Then it continues following the same scheme in Eb...

Please note: There was an error on the last line, which I wrote in the key of "C" instead of "D". This has been corrected now.

I think the last line should go:

G F#m Em
(I'm) Crazy for trying crazy for

B7 Em A7 D Bb
crying (and I'm) crazy for loving you

(mod.)D#
Crazy...

The V chord of the new key would be Bb.

Many thanks guys for the information and time you kindly put forth, I`ll be working on this for a while I can see. Funny thing is, we did it a good many years ago - at that time our female singer sang it in E but I kinda "fluffed" it with single string rundowns - now I`ll give it some full chordal sounds with a bit of luck.
Thanks too Russ for the e-mail part.
All the best.

Sorry, I goofed on the last line and wrote it in the key of "C".... (the nubers were right, howerver) It was really time to go to bed...
I'm correcting this now... Thanks!

I think that the intro and the endings in this song are quite flexible. I worked these off a "Willie"-web site a while ago. It was written in "C", I had added the numbers and now, by request, had to write it out in "D" (which is always a good exercise, but it was too late at night Image).

The chords leading into the bridge are:

Also, a very popular "embelishment" is to go from Em to B7th, and back to Em during the word "lonely".
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 11 December 2000 at 06:39 PM.]

I thought I had the number system worked out, but there's always something I haven't seen before. Image What is Iº? Is it a dim chord or something?

Yeah, it's a diminished chord.

Those four chords are sung by the Jordanaires on the Patsy Cline recording. I don't think Willie uses them.
[This message was edited by Bobby Lee on 12 December 2000 at 12:16 PM.]

Bob,
I once fluffed the intro
("I'm crazy for trying and crazy for crying...") by playing it in the wrong key.
We went slowly thru the chords in two different keys, and it got weirder and weirder until
the band was laughing hysterically.
We then turned to the singer and said "Take it!" This was at a wedding reception.
The keys were related, so at the beginning it sounded like a hip harmonization. By the end,
it sounded like anarchy.

Thanks b0b.

The thing I always like about playing "Crazy" is how much just playing the chords almost defines the melody.

I've heard several people kick the song off without the I-IV change. I always try to play it like the record, but it seems many people don't remember the intro (or don't like it?).

Donny- I too prefer it with the chromatic slide up to the IV inn the intro- although it was guitar on the original, it seems missing if it doesn' get played by somebody Image

I worked on it last week to get all the runs as all you guys have posted, then Saturday we finished the night off with Crazy (in D) I started by playing the run down for the intro and played a Bb chord to the resolve before kicking in to the melody, it worked out not sounding too bad.
