While doing a search on Joaquin Murphey's tuning I came across this thread. It has to be one of the most informative I've read on fret board styles. Some comedy in here too. Thought it might be worthwile bringing back up, and the Great One knows I made my living playing ShoBud fret markers for a long time. You don't like it, then it'll again fall back into agony (archives).

Fred,
Sure glad you dragged this old chestnut back up again. I have to report that on my new Williams guitars I put on Jerry Fessenden fret boads. I really like those longhorn symbols. I was going to use Sho~Bud fretboards (yeah, sure) but I think they have a 24" scale and Jerry's guitars and Bill Rudolph's guitars use a 24 1/4" scale.
Not that it would make a lot of difference, though. If I can come within a quarter of an inch of being on fret, that's doing pretty good for a left-handed Norwegian!
Uff-Da!

Well, you can always switch them if they are offensive.
I don't see, though, how having a card symbol on something means a thing. I'm not a gambler simply because I have hearts, clubs etc. on a guitar... they are kind of two COMPLETELY separate things.
If you do feel you can't stand the things, well, switch them, but hang onto the originals... most of us sinners would want them put back on if we bought a Sho-Bud from you

Gee, I didn't remember my attempts at "humor," but there they were.
But since the card symbols still might offend, IMHO, the somewhat hypersensitive amongst us, how about these symbols?
Third fret: Colt SAA Peacemaker
Fifth fret: Smith and Wesson Model 19
Seventh fret: Glock .40 cal auto
Ninth fret: Ruger Super Blackhawk
12th fret: AK-47 Assault rifle
(Spare the flames: I'm a gun owner and am totally okay with it. I also own a Sho-Bud as well as several decks of cards.
)
Too tame? Perhaps these:
Third fret: Charles Manson
Fifth fret: Ted Bundy
Seventh fret: John Wayne Gacy
Ninth fret: Mark David Chapman
12th fret: the four Manson family girls
The old card symbols don't seem so bad, do they?
For the country rock guys:
Third fret: Jerry Garcia
Fifth fret: Buddy Cage
Seventh fret: Rusty Young
Ninth fret: Sneaky Pete
12th fret: Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
Seriously, though: the computer, and advanced printers and materials, has enabled us to easily come up with any type of custom fretboard we'd like. I forsee a world with any number of different fretboards for any number of guitars, perhaps even changeable from gig to gig.

If you are a super liberal and a tree hugger, how about tree symbols on the fretboard.

Here's my 2 cents. Don'cha know that card symbols (and dice too) got their bad reputation because of all those ole cowboys in crowded smoke-filled drunken saloons in the TV movies we used to watch years and years and years ago? Everybody'd be sitting around tables playing cards and then all of a sudden they'd all stand up and shoot each other. The Lesson: Cards aren't bad, COWBOYS ARE!
By the way, having to answer as to why I played cards on planet earth will be the least of my worries when I meet God face-to-face. Believe me.
