well I'm in the camp with happy friendly little Eric, I'm at least as old as he is (HA !)
I liked some of the so called stars back then and some I didn't care for at all.
Kinda like today...
I like some of the so called stars today and some I don't care for at all. I like the one's who sing in tune and I don't like the ones who don't sing in tune...
To somehow try to lay claim that today's stars are not as genuine or "dignified" as the stars of yesterday is quite the stretch, to somehow to say that today's stars are abusive in nature and do things to excess as compared to the older days stars, is quite the stretch...
Lets see.. one of my favorite singers..
Keith Whitley, I think he had a real bad drinking problem...I could be wrong...
Willie Nelson, I doubt anyone wrote more songs then he did or earned more money than he did, but didn't he go broke recently ?
etc..blah blah blah
Where are the good stars ?
Well some are here and now, some are years gone by...
There is some great music being written , produced and recorded today, to imply that there is not is...
well..quite the stretch...
Just as there was some great music written, produced and recorded years back... There were some great stars back then and there are some really great stars today.. but, the time line doesn't make one better than the other, the music does.
At the end of the day, Jack Daniels in a shot glass pretty much survived all the decades !
just my take...

To me, posts like this are always sad.
People don't change. The same people that are here today, were here 100 years ago and 1000 years ago. The "good old day" attitude is one of naivety and and excuse to indulge in and exercise a judgmental mind.
What is the purpose of this thread other than to arouse bad feelings? What is the point? Bill, this is not the first thread you've started in this vein. It is threads like this that just create bad feelings and an excuse to spread bile. I really wish you would put the kabosh on this crap.
I'm 56.

You guys just need to go check a girl for ticks.
IMHO Hag's a true American poet.
I never heard Bucks friends say anything bad about him... only that he couldn't remember their names. I remember they said he bought a waitress a Miata once.... Maybe that's bad.
I get requests for Johnny Cash every night usually from the younger crowd.
I played in a band with Roy Roger's grandson and I can tell you that Roy was the real deal... except for his name. I think it was Don Sly or something like that. I have one of the last autographs he ever signed on a drawing of him.
I guess this is what legends are made of.

I'm near 69 yrs old (this Saturday!)and I certainly remember the good days. But time moves on and talent is talent. I grew up with Roy, Gene, Hank and Webb. I was a greased up Rockabilly Cat in the 50's and loved all of it. Buck, Merle, and George in the 60's were great favorites. That having been said, I don't spend too much dwelling on the past. I've been working hard on the steel the last few months and by the end of summer I'll be playing better than I ever did. However good that is. That's what I think about!

On our monthly regular Moose Country gig, we get requests for a Hendrix tune, from the older crowd !Danny Bates wrote:

How long did it take you to come up with shake your canes line?.Ben Jones wrote:If you guys wanna just yell at me and shake your canes thats cool. I am here for you. But I love George Jones , Hank Williams, Roger Miller, all that stuff.
The culture you miss was forever altered in the late 60's for better or worse, your kinda 40 some years late to be yelling at me.
I bet theres a lot of older guys on here most of you Kiddies coudn't handle,Me being one I rebuilt automatic transmissions for 30 yrs and have worked Punks into the ground many times.
Your grammar is typical of todays non educated youth
Hank Williams and "ALL THAT STUFF", I bet you could roll a good one though.

First of all You seem to have an opinion about everyones post. It seems you do well as long as your on the serving line. This only proves that. No need to post my response I already done it for you.Bill McCloskey wrote:And Bill, as an FYI: if you send me any private messages like you did the last time, just be warned, I will post them publicly here and answer them here.
I posted this after I read another post about stars dressing like Stars, it was then turned into personal assaults against stars that drink,or had personality problems like so many on these post seem to have.
This post was about Stars dressing like STARS nothing more. it has been embellished by others
Of course this is MY opinion:).

Well I agree with all of you guys even though you don't agree with each other. It was great back then, and it's great now. (Bill Howard would love me because I always dress well before I get drunk in public.) People were uneducated and degenerate back then and they are uneducated and degenerate now. I like that. Keeps me laughing. But seriously, if you really care about morality, then stop the damn wars and stop the damn oil spill and don't waste your time worrying about which stars are wearing torn blue jeans. (And Ben -- roll faster or I'll hit you with my cane!)
I give music lessons on several different instruments in Cambridge, NY (between Bennington, VT and Albany, NY). But my true love is pedal steel. I've been obsessed with steel since 1972; don't know anything I'd rather talk about... www.barryhyman.com

From one of my favorite SNL skits:
Grumpy Old Man: I'm oooooold! And I'm not happy! And I don't like things now compared to the way they used to be. All this progress -- phooey! In my day, we didn't have these cash machines that would give you money when you needed it. There was only one bank in each state -- it was open only one hour a year. And you'd get in line, seventeen miles long, and the line became an angry mob of people -- fornicators and thieves, mutant children and circus freaks -- and you waited for years and by the time you got to the teller, you were senile and arthritic and you couldn't remember your own name. You were born, got in line, and ya died! And that's the way it was and we liked it!
Life was simpler then. There wasn't all this concern about hy-giene! It my days, we didn't have Kleenex. When you turned seventeen, you were given the family handkerchief. ... It hadn't been washed in generations and it stood on its own ... filled with diseases and swarmin' with flies. ... If you tried to blow your nose, you'd get an infection and your head would swell up and turn green and children would burst into tears at the sight o' ya! And that's the way it was and we liked it!
Life was a carnival! We entertained ourselves! We didn't need moooovin' pitchurrrres. In my day, there was only one show in town -- it was called "Stare at the sun!" ... That's right! You'd sit in the middle of an open field and stare up at the sun till your eyeballs burst into flames! And you thought, "Oh, no! Maybe I shouldn't've stared directly into the burning sun with my eyes wide open." But it was too late! Your head was on fire and people were roastin' chickens over it. ... And that's the way it was and we liked it!
Progress?! Flobble-de-flee! In my day, when we were angry and frustrated, we just said, "Flobble-de-flee!" 'cause we were idiots and we didn't know what else to say! Just a bunch o' illiterate Cro-Magnons, blowin' on crusty handkerchiefs, waitin' in lines for our head to burst into flame and that's the way it was and we liked it!

First of all Mr Mc Closkey I have been a Pedal Steel player since Sep of 1979 I have met most of the greats like Speedy West, had Lunch with Jeff Newman, Doug jernigan sit next to my Wife and I in 1980 after I bought an LTD 400 off of Scotty at the convention and joked and talked to us,so don't act like I'm some Johnny come lately and your a "Veteran" just because you been on the Forum a while.Bill McCloskey wrote:I repeat: For someone who has been a guest of this forum for less than a month, you don't do yourself any favors with these types of posts.or had personality problems like so many on these post seem to have.
