Fishman/Beard reso pickup?

Post by Ulf Edlund »

Time for an old favourite topic to reappear.
I'm about to order a Goldtone PBS squareneck.
The big question thats keeping me awake is wether i should get it factory fitted with the Fishman/Beard pickup or not.
Anyone tried those pu's? I've read various comments about them.
And YES, i know microphones sound better.
But i need to have a PU too.

Ulf,
I like mine for when I have to have the extra volume. I think a mic is better of course but sometimes you just cant get enough volume with out feedback.Thats when I like the Fishman!. I think I would go ahead and get it installed If you can go the extrs expense. That way, at least its there if you want to use it.And if you dont need to use it , it wont hurt anything!
Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

Sure, get it factory fitted. It's not an easy pickup to get right, and a pain in the butt to adjust. Pickups aren't exactly a necessity, but ther've been several time I was glad I had mine(Not a Fishman).

I bought a Gibson Hound Dog Dobro which came with a Fishman P/U installed in it. I didn't like it because it had no volume so I ordered a MacInyre to put in it but haven't yet. I tried out the Fishman Pre-Amp unit I use for my mandolin on the Dobro and to my suprise the volume jumped up about 10 notches and the dang thing can actually be used at a gig now. I think I'll stick the MacIntyre in my Banjo if it'll work....JH

Ulf. I am about to put a Shatten pickup in a
Gold Tone. I have this pickup in my Dobro and
am very satisfied. The Gold Tones are very good resonators.

Thanx for your input guys.
Went ahead and ordered it today.
I'll soon be the owner of a PBS standard with a Fishman passive pickup.
