Dave, I don't know the origin of the song, I believe it is a Scottish song. I recorded it at home on my computer using BIAB to arrange the backing track and a Soundblaster 5.1 sound card with a Digitech RP100 FX unit set to hall reverb and a single repaet. That's about it really. I'm very pleased you enjoyed it. I have to say a very big thank you to Basilfor helping me out on this, Cheers Bas I owe you.

The words of the song "Annie Laurie" were originally written by her sweetheart, William Douglas, and amended by Lady John Scott (1810-1900) who altered the second verse and composed the third. This song was a favourite with Scottish soldiers during the Crimean War.

The tune for the present day version of this song was composed by Alicia Spottiswoode (Lady John Scott). A daughter in law of the 4th Duke of Buccleuch, she died in 1900. In a letter to a Dumfries newspaper she confirmed that she wrote the version of the song we know and sing today. She considerably altered Douglas's words and added a third verse of her own. She used a tune that she had earlier composed to accompany the old ballad Kempye Kaye. One small error she made in writing, "and dark blue is her e'e," for it is a well-known fact that Annie's eyes were hazel brown.

Annie Laurie

Maxwellton braes are bonnie,
Where early fa's the dew,
And 'twas there that Annie Laurie
Gave me her promise true.
Gave me her promise true,
Which ne'er forgot will be,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie,
I lay me doon and dee.

Her brow is like the snowdrift,
Her throat is like a swan,
Her face it is the fairest
That e'er the sun shone on.
That e'er the sun shone on,
And dark blue is her ee,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie
I lay me doon and dee.

Like dew on th' gowan lying,
Is the fa' o' her fairy feet,
And like winds in summer sighing
Her voice is low and sweet.
Her voice is low and sweet,
And she's a' the world to me,
And for bonnie Annie Laurie,
I lay me doon and dee.

Very well done, Dave. What a hauntingly beautiful melody. You sure did it justice.

I look forward to hearing more in the future.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

Dave, really nice playing.Baz is correct as usual, it is an Old Scottish tune (as opposed to Eddie Stobart Lorries which are English , sorry British humour and will not be appreciated by non Brits).First time I have heard it on steel and very impressed. Regards Malcolm.

Thank you all very much for your comments and compliments. Having not played in a band for some 7 years I was begining to lose interest and thought on several occasions about packing it in. Your comments have re inspired me. Thanks again.

What about posting the "Backing Track" for the forumites to play along with ?
Even the BIAB file or GS standard MIDI would suffice !!
(Just a thought)
I particularly like the 6m-2m7-37th section, nice choice of chords.

I don't know how you do it Basil! Not only your playing and knowledge of the Steel guitar, but your computer skills are equally as impressive. Thanks again Basil, and by the way I reckon you ought to ask at least $3 an hour for that gig.
Cheers Dave.
