Okay, the forum's been a little blah lately. What was Jerry Garcia's copedant? What pickup tap did he use on his ZB Custom? left,right, or middle?

On the first NRPS album, he used a lot of rock effects on steel. Was that the first album to feature an effects-laden pedal steel? It seemed very innovative at the time.

A search of the Forum on Jerry Garcia yeilds tons of comments, but no real answer to Kevin's question.

I'd like to know too, even though I can't think of any of his work that needs more than the basic three pedals and an E Lower lever.

In a 1971 Guitar Player interview, Jerry stated that he used "just the E9 neck and the three pedals to raise the tone and two levers to lower it". So I think it´s safe to assume those would have been the standard lowers for strings 4 and 8 on one and 2 on the other.

from what i can gather, he had a pretty standard setup and used the middle position on his pickup for Teach, but it sounds like he used the single tap position for the sounds he got on workingman's dead and the other stuff, i'm guessing because it doesn't seem to take as much space up in the recording, unlike the middle and triple tap positions which seem to take a bunch of space. he may have used the triple position for the new riders stuff, at least that is what it sounds like most of the time. with him anything was possible....

Did he use an .011 gauge 3rd string?

"Teach Your Children" by Crosby, Stills and Nash is probably his best known steel work, Lee.

Garcia surely tuned JI or even flatter on the thirds in some cases. His wasn't the best-tuned steel in the world.

b0b - I was being facetious. I'm 50 years old and CS&N was one of my favorite groups. CSN&Y weren't too bad, either. I could only take so much of Neil's voice, though. I remember our band working for hours on those 3 and 4 part harmonies. I always got stuck with the high ones. I had the best falsetto voice at the time.

Just out of that picture, to Jerry's right, is a Fender Twin Reverb, with JBL's. How do I know? It's got one of those little "JBL" badges in the lower right corner!! AND I'M STILL LOOKING FOR ONE!!!!!!

Yeah, Jerry had his vices-but from what I've read, the ones that did him in were strictly over the counter-The aforementioned twinkies, and lucky strikes.

Same book-He had slid back into drugs, everyone knew it, and his relatively new wife asked him if that's what he wanted to do. He said no, and checked into the rehab to get sober. He was there several days befoe passing away in his sleep. Congestive Heart Failure was the primary cause, (I'm in St Louis and don't have the book with me, so I'm going from memory) which is something a LOT of us are flirting with.

Garcia from the very early days never had very good eating or health habits-according to Cage it was not unusual to find Garcia backstage with his own personal bucket of KFC just hanging out, and he was a notorious junk food junkie. He smoked a couple packs a day-many times more-and had fallen into a diabetic coma at least once and almost died then. His health was never the best to begin with, and diabetic flareups were not uncommon (he was not born with it, he developed it.)

The Dr.'s said that while his drug use certainly could not be ignored, it was not the primary cause of his death. Anyone with the kind of habits Garcia had would have been in poor shape, even without the drugs, esepecially with the diabetic flareups. Garcia did not OD, he died in a rehab facility. His widow later said that he had developed a problem with sleep apnea as well, and that had been her concern.

I guess you might call it self induced natural causes.
