The WALL of STEEL

Post by Ray Montee (RIP) »

Last night two of the areas "hottest" pickers put on a splendid performance out at Jubitz' Truck Stop. The Wall of Steel....was an experience, first one, then the other, dishing out their own hot licks to one another, in sort of a challenge, if you will.
One seemed to motivate the other and it was
a real display of fine, steel talent. Oh yes, the two great ones were in fact Tired Ole Eric on his customized, one of a kind,
Sho-Bud and Duggie Do-rite Jones on his black Formica Emmons all push steel guitar.
Nice to hear some "fun" back in the steel guitar. Judy and Larry head up the fine group with vocals and it all goes for a relaxing and pleasureable evening.

Dang it! Missed you last night, Ray. We we're planning on going tonight, so I guess we won't see you. Yup, Doug and Eric are a pair all right. Different styles, different equipment and tone, yet it all comes together. For those of you who haven't seen these two masters at work side by side, please come out. You won't be disappointed. I'll be sitting right in front of them, about 15 feet back...watching...trying to learn something. Image

I caught the "wall of steel" at Jubitz Thursday night. Imagine a band with no guitar, no keyboards, no fiddle, just two steel players, bass, drums and vocals.. Unlikely as it seems, these two guys can both compliment each other, and stay out of each other's way.

It was a fun visit. Got to catch up with Doug, who I haven't seen for a while, and meet Eric, who I now have to add to my list of favorite players. Way to go, guys.

Eric is the one with the hat, by the way...

Hey PAUL! THAT WAS NO TYPO! Take a really close look at the photo (Photo's don't lie!) Jerry included above.
Don't look at Eric, the one on the left with the cowboy hat and fancey western cut togs, but look closely at Duggie Do-Right on the right, the one without the hat and attired in an earlier version of Billy Robinson (Red Foley days)styled plaid shirt. Notice closely the corners of Duggie's mouth, how they curl downward, the opposite of a smile.
That's 'cause he's pushing SO HARD on those
Emmons Black Formica "ALL PUSH" Pedals. Now, Duggie has NEVER lied to me or openly mislead me or anyone I've ever known, but Duggie does have a technical mind and is most always found DEEP in THOUGHT, not a lotta wasted words with Duggie. Now, the word I got, is that he's spent some of his lonelier hours working on this new invention and anticipates great interest and worldwide demand for this "SUPER steel guitar modification"; that is adaptable to any current/past make, model, color, lacquered or Mica pedal steel guitar. ANYBODY can have a push-pull or all-pull, but only Duggie has an ALL PUSH EMMONS. If Duggie said it, it has to be true. Just as Eric (I'm sure he's inside the loop and can verify this "premature release" on my behalf)
will most certainly attest to.
Duggie Do-Right is a generous, loving and sensitive individual and rather than keep this thing under wraps and all to himself, he is most anxious to see pedal steel guitar players throughout the world enjoying his
lastest hybrid gadget. MOST IMPORTANTLY, he indicated to my "confidential source", that the price will one ANYONE CAN AFFORD, whether a full blown hard-working professional picker or merely a bedroom/garage type fun picker.
Duggie Do-Right and Tired Ole Eric are with the RENEGADE BAND and when not appearing at Jubtiz' area wide popular Ponderosa Room, can often be found at the Flying "M" Ranch near McMinnVille, OR.
It's not uncommon to see folks from all over the USA, Canada and Mexico in their enthusiastic audience, people that have litterally traveled thousands of miles just to hear this high quality, pleasant to listen to and showmanship that the true country western music lover has grown to expect. These two great musicians, the two hottest commodities in western music in the Pacific Northwest, are known about these parts as "THE WALL of STEEL". They've just finished their latest regional tour where hundreds, if not thousands, of new fans for the pedal steel guitar have been created.
When you have Eric and Duggie, who needs a Hollywood celebrity to provide the hype?

Ray.

You forgot to mention the BTS (Beat/to/shit) mods I've done on my PIII. They're even more affordable. I've actually put about a quarter million dollars into it for strings, knife handles. and repairs, so my accountant Murray tells me..

All in all, I had a GOOD time, we destroyed a couple guitar players, got some dirty looks from those providing vocal fills, ( Just kidding,, Larry and Judy are the best country duo I can think of, and they do all the steel friendly songs a guy's ever want to play).

One of us spilled a semi-adult beverage, and I got to put a couple cigarette burns in uncharted territory..

Thanks for the Pic Mr Gleason. If I'd known more about your discography and accomplishments I'd have been a durn site more nervous.

It was just a little less than SRO, but we all lived, got paid, and it was nice to meet and share with the pickers that came out.

We even got "flashed", by some older guy in the audience, We could see a steering wheel mark and what looked like the imprint of the back side of an Emmons on his prominent frontal counterweight.. It was kind of overwhelming.

Thanks all. Maybe there'll be another leg of the tour the week of Thanksgiving. We'll see.

Also, the band I regularly play with. Jason Snell and the Last Ride will be playing the night of the Jubitz' Dierks Bentley show that's been sold out, on thursday, and then Fri-Sat there. We have a fine young guitar player Steve Sarber out of Stocton CA, that I really enjoy playing with.

I'm wondering if DB has a PSG player. We've got a lengthening line of guys that want to get the hell out of here...

Me?

I dunno. I think I'd have to change my name and get a Sierra....

Thanks all, especially Mr. Doug Jones, and Renegade, Ray M, Jerry G, Mike W, Wes Bakken et al. Sometimes, though rarely it isn't all about the money. Last week was a prime example.

FYI: It's a '92 Lashley LeGrande 8x9, 18.5K stock single coils. The all push must be the fact I'm trying to fool everyone by pushin' some tired old licks on the crowd. I must say, however, Ole Eric and I somehow pull it off musically and in a fun manner.

See, what'd I tell you?

Nobody quite like Duggie Do-Right, a real Pro.
