I dropped a couple three hundred bucks on a mandolin the other day. MAN these little things are fun! (and light to carry around, even with the case)

I found that my music theory background with steel and piano has really made it easy for me to pick this instrument up and really get something out of it.

Joey -

I already found it by mistake, and yes, from what I saw, you're right, there's a lot of info on there. My registered name is "PedalSteeler"

Larry -

I changed my signature, but after my first post. It's a "cheapie", an Alvarez A-100. I'm guessing that means it's an "A" style. What's the difference between Weber and Kentucky? I really don't know anything about them, except it's pretty easy for me to figure out so far. I think it's tuned just the same as a fiddle. I already have the good music theory and can play scales to music already, it's a lot of fun. (even two note "harmony" scales, like on steel and dobro.)

You can see my mandos at http://www.joeyace.com/inst.htm

I find it funny when the Mandolin Cafe guys start complaining about how difficult tuning is. If they only knew...

I find it funny when us pedal steelers complain how expensive they are. Sure you can get a cheapie mando for a few hundred but it takes about 2500 to get to the next step up and they just go outa site from there plus the top builders aren't even taking people for their waiting lists anymore. It makes the steel builders look pretty good.

I'm certainly no authority on mandolins. A buddy of mine bought a Kentucky A style for his wife to learn to play. So he brought it over for me to tune. I thought the neck would break off before I got it in tune and I really needed a pair of vise-grips to turn the tuning pegs and also to make chords.I don't think she will ever play this thing. I have a friend that has a Gibson F and that things plays like butter. Sweet Butter (lightly salted)

With all the talk about "taking the steel in a new direction", maybe you guys should try playing the steel with a mandolin? Now that would really be something...

The most irresponsible thing was posting this in the wrong section of the Forum. Image

Seriously, I'm moving this to the 'Music' section, where discussions about mandolins and other instruments (even b@n!%$) are encouraged.
