Lefty Frizzell's Steeler?

Post by Wayne Carver »

I was listening to some of his songs like "Shine, Shave, Shower", "You Want Everthing But Me", & "I Want To Be With You Always" and was wondering who was playing steel and why it sounds the way it does? I know someone is going to say it is in his hands or heart and I know part of it is but it still sounds different than modern steel just like the wonderful piano parts on the songs sound different than modern piano parts. I've noticed the same sound on Hank Williams albums.

I don't have the Lefty discography in front of me, but I believe the original recordings of those tunes were recorded in Dallas when Lefty was using Blackie Crawford's Western Cherokees as his band, and the steel player was Curly Chalker.

Could be wrong, though. Image

I definitely know that it was this band and Curly on "Always Late."
