I was told to the thickness of 3 quarters stacked. The first time I used one I had it too close to the strings. BIG MISTAKE!! This pick up has some power, I called Bobbe Seymour and he told me the height to start with. Hope this will help.

use three quarters as a gauge works great.
(3/16ths of an inch)

More ideas for replacing pickups are here as well: http://www.steelguitarinfo.com/other/pickups/pickups.html on http://www.SteelGuitarINFO.com which is essentially an OnLine Owner's Manual for most all brands of steel guitars.

Hope that helps Image

Larry
Why don't you just experiment, and put it where it sounds good to you?

I also installed a BL 710-97 on my Lashley LeGrande.
First: install it without the nylon spacers underneath.
The distance between the pickup and the strings is on my guitar 5 millimeters.
It sounds great.

Greetings from The Netherlands.

According to Paul Sr., Vernon is correct. (3/16") It works fine on my Franklin guitar! "Big John" http://community.webtv.net/KeoniNui/BigJohnBechtels
