Some Dallas Convention Highlights

Post by Chuck S. Lettes »

I'm still hearing steel guitar music although I am back at my high school teaching job. My students even seem to be noticing that far-away look in my eyes. What a weekend! There were so many highlights of the Dallas Convention. I especially enjoyed sets by Jim Cohen (nice smooth vibrato and great selections), Jerry Brightman who came out with some fast picking on his first tune(!), Smiley Roberts' great sounding Sho Bud (the tones reminded me of Jimmy Day), Bert Rivera's wonderful choice of tunes, Herb Steiner's sense of western swing. Of course the weekend would not be complete without spending time at the Wayne Yakes "Hospitality Rooms," eating ribs and chatting with Johnny Bush, visiting with the Colorado Connection (Bob Case, John Arnold, Dick and Lois Meis, etc.). I especially loved being able to perform "Ave Maria" with my guitarist friend Jim Stahlhut, and with Lynne Yakes who has such a lovely voice. Playing this tune for my pal Wayne's 50th birthday will be an event that I will always remember. The staff band again was super, featuring Roy Rosetta, Paul Polish, and Johnny Cox on bass. The displays were always a pleasure to visit. Thank you Jim Baron for showing me some new tricks with the Band in the Box program. I loved getting to hear Scotty on the Frypan (what tones!), and seeing and talking with my mentors, Herb Remington and Speedy West. There is always so much wonderful history at these shows. Thanks to Charlie Norris and Louie Hallford for letting me be a part of this wonderful show. I look forward to next year!

Also-

Akiro Kobayashi-unable to play yet after a stroke, but well enough to get there, playing a few notes on Scotty's Rick during his set on Sunday.

Followed by Cindy Cashdollar and Herb Remington playing dueling steels during their set.
