Young-Timers

Post by Melinda Dauley »

Everyone here has seen so much and lived through so much. I feel like I should be saying ga ga ga and sucking my thumb compared to you all.
How Young is everyone here? How long have you been playing steel?

I am a young-timer. I am 18 years old, and have played steel for just over a year. The thing about this forum is that the members are very kind to beginners. Welcome to the club.

Melinda, you will probably get about 300 replies to this post. You see, we love to brag on our age Image You will also find that the "average" steeler's age is somewhere around 47 yrs old. I am 49. Be 50 in April. I mistakenly bought a Sho-Bud Lloyd Green model in 1977. You do the math. Havn't stopped yet. As long as I have played, I should be alot better. I'm a late bloomer. I enjoy plying more than ever so stay with it. You will have good job security forever.
Should be in your neck of the woods soon with the Derailers. Look me up. Regards.

My kids say, "Pop, you're trying to learn the pedal steel after 40 years of playing 6 string guitar? And you're still checking out all the babes?"

I tell them, "I may be 61 years old, but it's still me in here."

I'm 65....been playing since I was 11. Took lessons at that age....and I'll never forget my first song, "Jesus Loves Me", in E7th tuning.

Happy picking!!

I`m not much on going way back. I bought my first ,"Hawaiian Steel Guitar," in 1941, for $5 . learned to play quitwell. Played all during W W 2, . When I came home ,every thing changed, I just gave up on it. Needed lots of time to get my head straight.

49. Like Chris I'll be 50 in April. Aries are the best lovers. Been playing for ten years, but it feels like 100. Now if I can just tear myself away from the steel...<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 24 February 2003 at 10:20 PM.]</p></FONT>

I'm 59 years old and have been playing steel 45 years, started with an eight string Sierra. Have a Sho-Bud LDG now and love it.

I used to play in Seattle at the Riverside Inn with Ira Allen and the Renegades, was with him for about three years, Seattle is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there again, toooooooooooooobigggggggggggg.

I'm a young 63 and "everything" still works great. I started playing Dobro and a little lap steel in the late 50's but never really got too serious. I had a Fender 400 once and a 1000 like yours and got a little more serious but still stayed with the lead guitar as my main squeeze. Finally in the 70's I got a S-12 ShoBud and haven't stopped since. I play multiple instruments but nothing seems as addicting as the pedal steel. What other instrument has all the shows, conventions, etc. like the steel does? Nothing can compare to it. Have a great one Melinda, and we're glad you're among us...
