Amazing 'steel' player: Derek Trucks

Post by Dan Tyack »

OK, maybe I should have posted this in the non-pedal area, but I just bought an absolutely amazing CD by a young musician named Derek Trucks (who happens to be the nephew of the Allman Bros. drummer Butch Trucks). This guy plays slide guitar, but unlike any slide player I have ever heard. He has been listening to the great Sacred Steel players, but also indian musicians like Ali Akbar Khan, and also guys like Coltrane. I don't know any steel player who couldn't listen to his playing and learn something. He totally knocks me out, but especially his taste. So many child prodigies get so into the technique that that's what they focus on. This guy seldom wanks (and he could wank with the best of them). Check out his site at www.derektrucks.com . He is the real deal.

And, inspirational as his CD can be, seeing him live let's you hear him at still a whole different level. Amazing, wonderful stuff!

I saw Derek play with the A.B.B. a few years ago-He is a natural at slide playing-however he like Ry Cooder does not use picks-That concept does not work for me-I just cannot get tone or volume without them

I'd heard of him but kind of dismissed him. I listened to a lot of the clips on the site. The kid's good! thanks for the tip, Dan.

The last clip from the new record is interesting. Very compelling phrasing.

That's a great record, Dan.

Sonny Landreth is another slide player that is so far beyond atypical slide playing it's not funny. Always inspiring to listen to.
