Looking for players in Reno

Post by Pat Goodbla »

As in my earlier post, I am relocating to Reno for a few months and would like to meet some steel guitarists and other musicians. Any suggestions where to start? Appreciate any and all help.

Jimmy Youngblood has been in the Reno area for years. When we played John Ascuaga's Nugget Nov 2001, one of the pickers we shared the stage with mentioned Youngblood was still around. Last I knew he had a road case business. You might ask around the players or music stores if they know how to contact him. Good luck, DJ.

I left the Reno area in '89.
I played with a base player there that new a steel player that had left the road a few years prior to that.
He was working in the MGM casino as a tech working on slot machines.
Don't know his name but I had the impression that he was a good picker.
Good luck

Hi Pat, there are a few steel players in the Northern Nevada area, But pickins are pretty slim. I think Jimmy Youngblood is on the road but i'm not sure ..... I haven't talked to him in a couple of years. Otis Masters plays with the Motifs, he plays a U-12 Kline, Tommy Stiles plays with Rick Hays and American Steel, and a couple of guys at the Lake.I sit in with a few bands when I get the urge, but nothing regular......And Jack, that Steel Player you're referring to was none other than Ernie Hagar.....too bad he's not in this area any more i used to really dig watching him play

Jim
Sorry I never got to hear him.
The bass player that I worked with said he was really good but that he liked working with me cuz I didn't know anything (a compliment?) and played more simply, he thought Ernie was a little to jazzy. (I can't recall his name)
I did a few gigs with a base player named Gene Nelson, Silver something band, He had a steel player that live in South Shore Tahoe.
Can't remember his name either, (lived in a cool big cabin) good picker.
Hell! I can't seem to remember names lately.
I lived in Gardnerville and left cuz it hit 29 below zero!!!!! Image

Hi Jack, I think the Band with Gene Nelson was Niki & Goldrush....and the Steel Players name was Oakley Casaboom(sp) I haven't seen him in a coon's age either, I think he's still around ......but I'm not sure. Interesting thing about that band is Niki went on to front for Highway 101 after Paulette Carlson left, and the Keyboard Player Gene LeSage is now the Bandleader for Colin Raye. small world Eh???...I think we may have met also.....your name is vaguely familiar...those were the good 'ol days....

Jim
We may have met but my memory's kinda funny.
Yes that was oakley nice guy seemed to have a different set up.
I ran into Nicki years ago when Highway 101 was performing here. She was always a very sweet girl and I was happy that she did good things after she left NV. She introduced me to Jack Daniels, thier guitar player and since he played at Cowtown in San Jose we had some friends in common.
It is a small world isn't it? Image

Thanks to all for your responses. Jim, if you don't mind, I will give you a call when I get into town. Is your number in the local book?
