Well Rebel has put up the intro and solo to what Lloyd played on the Opry; as sent to him from Marco.
There's a nice picture of Lloyd and of course the beautiful sounds of Lloyd Green right here on this page> Click Here!!to hear the MAN
I actually have a couple days off later this next week....and will attempt to Tab this very nicely played intro and solo to "You don't have very far to Go".....unless Jeff Lampert beats me to it ."go ahead Jeff, Make my Day"....ha....
Ricky
I was blessed to be at the taping of an Allan Jackson Christmas Special at the opry that will be aired Nov-29 on CMT. Lloyd was the player on the show. He sounded great. That tone, what else can I say that hasn't already been said.
Anyone else have trouble listening to the WSM archives? All I get is "ready" and it just sits there. I have tried a bunch of times and I do have a fast connection.
Where's Lloyd's tone gone? It sounds to me that the humbucker is sucking the tone.
Sorry folks, even though Lloyd displays his usual high standard of playing, he is not doing justice to his talent by having a humbucker in his Sho Bud.
Of course, he probably had no choice, as single coil pickups would be frowned on by the recording engineers.
This is, of course, my own worthless opinion.
If anything, it wasn't his humbucker.....it would be his unfamiliararity with the Webb amp there that might have made his sound not up to your expectations. Live, he sounded just great....I was at the sound board while he played. Of course, my opinion is subjective and like that. (This stated just to forego any further posts about that crap.)
I am looking forward to your next appearance on the Opry......when was that again?

Nowhere!

Then it's apparent that you have not heard him play live lately!
he is not doing justice to his talent by having a humbucker in his Sho Bud
he can use a tin can for a pickup, a tin can for an amp and both tied together with kite string and sound better than you, me or most anyone on the forum.
This is, of course, my own worthless opinion
Well, you DID say it!
......Like Jeff said, an unfamiliar amp can sometimes be unforgiving.
I guess some people hear differently
That's a nasty comment. What makes you think that YOU are hearing it right. In fact, as an owner of a half dozen Lloyd Green albums and CD's, there is no question in my mind that what I heard was distinctly more thinner and sharper than what he normally records. It still sounded wonderful, but did not sound like what I have been used to hearing. If there is any doubt about this, then throw on an old Ricky Skaggs or Don Williams song.

People, this was a recorded RADIO broadcast not a studio cut. Watch the Alan Jackson Christmas Special in late November or go hear him play live next time he plays a Superjam but don't judge him or his tone or anyone else's by a radio broadcast. That isn't a fair judgement for anyone.
That isn't a fair judgement for anyone
And Mike, don't misrepresent my point. I was saying that Lloyd's tone was in fact different from what we were accustomed to. There could be (and probably are) 20 reasons for it (radio broadcast, amp, engineer, etc. etc.), but the point is that it WAS different, and that it was unfair to harshly criticize anyone for remarking about it. THAT was my point.

I agree with Jeff Lampert, and thank Mr. Burton for his observation.
I think we're all glad to see Lloyd back in the game.

I'm very glad to see Lloyd back in the game, and I'm sure that his tone at the opry will be a temporary aberration. I'm pleased that other players also noted the change in his tone, and came to my assistance when I was 'under fire'.
Thanks,everybody, for a lively debate.
I agree that on the radio broadcast, Lloyd's "Sound" was not what I would recognize has "His". Whether it was the the Webb amps, or the pickup, the tone was thin compared to other guitars that night.
Nothing nasty at all about it Jeff. Just a fact. Two people can hear the same steel guitar. One thinks it stinks, the other thinks its great. Thats why I try not to berate people who play certain guitars that I personally feel don't have any tone. People do hear things differently, and thats okay. Thats why we have this forum, so people can give their opinion. Now I'll go back and listen and see if I changed my mind.
Maybe IM wrong.
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 22 October 2002 at 03:45 PM.]

I too was in the audience that evening for the late show. Live Lloyd's tone and touch were absolutely nothing short of amazing. The man's still got it, He's always always had it, and he's back. Almost sound like a pitch for an Arnold Schwartz-whatever movie.
Thanks,Ricky. I missed the show while running the roads. I enjoyed the clips almost as much as I would have enjoyed watching Lloyd play the way only Lloyd can play. He is still "The Man" in my humble opinion. Thanks again. Corky.
