C. J. Udeen - steeler with Andy Griggs

Post by John LeMaster »

Had the opportunity to hear another very good young steel picker Friday. C. J. Udeen plays for Andy Griggs. I was able to meet C. J. after the show, and found him to be as friendly as he is talented.

He played some great stuff, both the pretty ballad stuff and the very fast. I asked him about his steel guitar, which looked a little unusual. He said it is basically a "parts" guitar, put together from several different makes. He has a Lawrence 910 pick up and plays mostly E9th. His amp is an Evans.

Griggs was very entertaining, playing mostly what I would call modern country, i.e., sometimes bordering on light rock. However, he did a Hank Sr. tune "Move It On Over" as well as a couple of Waylon numbers. C. J. was able to shine on much of the program.

One other note: aside from Joe Wright, I think C. J. Udeen is the most animated steel player I have seen in a while. He displays a lot of showmanship while playing steel guitar.

I see on the Whiskey River billboard that Andy and Chad will be back in Macon on Nov 2nd. Think I'll go see what he's up to. It was pretty darn good the last time he was here !!

I didn't realize (nor hear at the concert) that his first name is Chad. Everyone called him "CJ". He is certainly a nice guy and fine picker.
