Wille Nelson--Steel Player?

I recently bought a bargain bin CD of Willie
Nelson. The music was was recorded years ago
with Willie covering tunes like "Fraulein"
and "San Antonio Rose". The steel sounds
familiar for the the time period but I can't
pin him down. The Album is called -"Country
Classics, Willie Nelson Style.

I'm not familiar with that particular album title, but if it was made in the '60s (his "short-hair" period

) it was most likely Buddy Charleton.

Yep, it's the whole Texas Troubadours with Buddy Charleton on steel and Leon Rhodes on lead guitar. One of Willie's finest albums.

Jimmy Day was playing for him quite a bit around San Antonio in the mid 60s, along with a local bass player named David Zettner. They had a great country sound back then and of course Willie wrote some of best songs back then.

I just got a video tape composed of old stuff from Earnest Tubb's T.V. show (circa 1963). If you like early Buddy Charleton, this is a "must have" item!

I believe Tom Bradshaw used to offer an LP of the Ernest Tubb band of that era featuring Leon Rhodes and Buddy Charleton. Hot stuff. Maybe it's available on CD now.
