Hi Ya'all

Post by Scott Clancy »

Just joined and looking forward to talkin to ya. Basically I am an older player from the 70's and am a "retired backporch" picker now, but enjoy jamming with bands that play that older stuff. I've been lurking in this forum for some time now and realy enjoy it.

PART ONE……..

I just forwarded that to Bobbie !11 .....................just kidding :-)
OK guys here we go, this might stirr up trouble or rase a few hairs, so please remember my views on this "Hang it up" subject is pertenant to me and NOT a GENERAL
statement to the steel playing community. It only pertains to what works for me.
Since a was 17 I was a steel picker, always had a double neck , 70% of my studies where
E9 country. I hate to say it but it’s true, Teach your children sucked me into the steel like a magnet, then soon I obandoned the country rock scene as they where going more towards an R&B rythem and leaving the country rythem. By the time 6 months rolled by after getting my steel and learning to play that contravertial tune I studied it’s main streem birth and that led me to country music. Got hooked and still am. To make a long story short I played the game of the music business on weekends and those where the best days of my life. Than I tried the full time picker scene and that’s where I sold my soul to the devil [or should I say Gaylord entertainment?]. Lets just call it “The scene”.
That’s when my heart became totally “detached from my fingers” and I started playing the lousiest steel guitar you ever heard. I totally trashed my steel pickin carreer when I learned to read Staff sheet music for commercial work and sessions. Witch I got very little of. Finally the music changed to a more “Keyboardy” type pop, gum chewing type of noise and I found myself staring at my fingers with a dog face for 40 out of the 45 tunes a band will play in an evening. It hit me suddenly, I no longer can answer the infamous question “What kind of music you like ?” with a resounding “COUNTRY OF CORSE” for an answer.

---------PART TWO-------------------
Ok guys still with me?
Country doesn’t mean country anymore, it can mean “rock”, “pop”, too often means “R and B with an insertion of twang” instead of selling a heart warmed story their now selling SEX !! and three minute drum and bass solo’s as far as top 40 goes with a few decent exeptions to that rule the batting average is grim. 2 out of ten country songs are any good for me by todays “Radio DJ play” criteria. The new has too many instruments playing at the same time and too much techno gadgets to accomidate the lack of “feel” in the players fingers. I was also experiencing problems with an other half of mine fooling around behind my back every chance she got, so I hung it up to save my soul, and marrage. Well, it didn’t save my marrage, but it did save my soul !!, I wont and will never sell out to the almighty dollar again. After listening to my tapes I made I was in aw as too the sweet tone and feel I had back in the 80’s with a weekend band called White Line Fever. Then how CRAPPY isounded 6 years ago with a proffesional band out of Nashville. I heard those tapes and said? “What is all that trashy Ricketty Tickety Bish BOOOOM BANNNNNNG!!!”: comeing from ? It was my lousy steel picking during the last two years of my playing. I was playing music I couldn’t stand to save my carreer and that will ruin a picker every time. Lets rap it up guys, I’ll end on this note.
I just buried my mother a month ago and being a classical musician herself she told me 5 hours before she died in my arms quote “ Scott , the only thing you ever did that p%$#ed me off was quite playing the steel guitar. “ I told her that the Bars aren’t playing good music any more mom” and she said “so what” play the damn steel anyway you can; but don’t play or worry about money, it ruins music and food, keep your job”. Well that’s it guys , I’m back with new gear and playing what I want not what some yahoo wants. , Now that I have refreshed my outlook on being an “Artist” rather then a “Proffessional musician” I am playing better then ever. With a new Sierra d10 keyless, extra pickups, and a “free will” from my emotions. I found myself shutting off all those effects from my rackmont gear, unplugging one after the other soon I found out the best effect is “No effects” Just pure steel with a touch of reverb, trashed all my rackmount wizbangs and am at aw howe wonderfull a plain steel sounds, it by itself is an “effect” the can’t be reproduced through a computer chip. I’m back for keeps but as a free spirited artist and creator I AM NOT A PROFFESSIONAL MUSICIAN !!! A pro can be told what to play, when to play, and when to go to the bathroom !!! That’s not me, I am Scott Clancy Not Buddy Emmons
Loyd Green, or Pete Drake. I do it my way or the highway, and am defiantly keeping my Network Engineering day job !!!
O Well enough fer now !!
