Randy Reinhard...still unreal
Worked a gig in Ft. Worth last night with two of my favorite steel players, Jim Loessberg and Randy Reinhard. Jim is also one of the top traditional country drummers on the planet and was on drums last night which is about as equal a treat as his steel playing!
We were both treated to Randy's incredible playing and unbelievable tone from his old wrap-around. If you haven't heard Randy play in awhile, it is well worth the effort to make it to a gig that he's on so you can hear what I'm talking about. Last night we worked with Jake Hooker at the Borrowed Money club in the stockyards but he also gigs out with Darrell McCall and a few others. He also does a lot of the steel sessions in the San Antonio area. Guys, you will not believe the sound he gets and the uniqueness of his playing style. From the pretty ballads to the hard-core swing & be-bop, he is a treasure that needs to be heard and appreciated.
We are truly blessed with many awesome steelers here in the San Antonio/hill-country area and Randy is one of our gems. Look him up and make one of his gigs. I promise you it will be worth your time and I know you will leave as blown away and inspired as I am. I get to work a lot around him and it is always such an incredible pleasure, every time.
Randy, ...love you man.

Thanks Jim. I really appreciate that. That was too much fun! It is so much fun working with Reggie too. That guy can play anything he hears in his head on fiddle and it's a blast working with him. He's one of the best double-stop parts players I've ever had the pleasure of working with. I can play any melody and he's all over it with parts, and nice ones too, in tune. Let me tell you, that is HARD to do on fiddle. He doesn't cut corners at all with the harmonies which makes things very challenging but he's more than up to it and nails them. I swear he was playing in 8th position at one point, and in tune! He's a hard swinger too. Big league ideas and execution. Although he's regarded as one of the top fiddle players around, I think he's way under-rated. A truly awesome, raw talent.
Did you check out the highs of Randy's Emmons? Jeez....talk about silky, pure highs for days! And he was nice & loud, the way I like to hear him. It's those little, subtle additions in the chords that kill me. Hard to catch if you're not really listening but they are there and extremely effective. They come out of nowhere and strike like a harmonic cobra. You immediately feel it down deep. Dicky Overbey is another one that has mastered that technique as well as the original master of that and many other steel-technique innovations, Buddy. You can listen to the early sixties Price cuts and hear that going on. Like on "Cold, Cold War" and "Don't Touch Me". What is so cool is that those harmonic treats are very subtle and in the background but that's what makes them SO effective to me.
Randy's timing is unreal. It makes you want to move. Always there and right on the cojones. He sets up syncopated grooves that unify the stage and gets everyone on the same page.
I'm still caught up in that tone!.........
Glad another steeler was there to appreciate it. Jim & I were in hog-heaven all night.

Randy got a great education in steel guitar playing as he hung out with THE BIG E in his earlier career. He learned his lesson well. Saw him with MCall. Incredible. Bobby, hopefully Jody Cameron saw your post. He speaks very well of you. I talked to you once in Tulsa when ya'll were with Kersh, and you were on fiddle the night I saw Randy with MCall. Best regards and I'll see you down the road. Jody.

Thanks for your support Jelle. It's good to know that someone who lives so far away in another part of the world appreciates these players too. I know what you mean. I've heard some of the recordings from back then and it is very difficult to tell who is who on those tapes. That is something that doesn't happen very often at all and an honor that only Randy is capable of achieving.
Jody S.,....If you talk to Jody C. before I do tell him to email me. There's another great player. We were "morning/breakfast" buds in Kersh's band. What an absolutely wonderful guy. We used to spend entire afternoons talking about the old Price cuts with Buddy, Tommy, Grady, etc., and how it just doesn't get any better. The best country players that ever lived with the best country singer we've ever had, with some of the best songs ever written. What a combination!! The old man is still singing his tail off too. He turned 76 this past Jan. and is still the best.

Bobby- The reason we never get to work together is there's just too many great steel guitarists in San Antonio-including you! Also, working fulltime for Robert Keen and haven't been doing any pickup work.
I love your work and hope we get a chance to play soon.
Say hello to all those great steel players for me.
