In the late 60s, on the way to a show in Peoria, IL, one of Waylon's camper trucks skidded on an icy bridge and into the structure. Sleeping in the over-the-cab berth were his guitarist and bass player and they didn't make it. Waylon was devastated !Bill Anderson, Hank Snow and Johnny Bush all offered to do doubles and let Waylon go home. He couldn't do that. With someone elses musicians filling in, he sang like I had never heard him sing before and perhaps never again. His voice was crystal clear and overflowing with emotion. I saw people crying in the audience and I had tears in my eyes as well.

I think it was his special way of saying good bye to family/friends. I wish that some one could sing that way for him tonight and maybe some one is....."The outlaw who walks through Jesse's dreams."

This is really sad news. I didn't know Waylon had a lot of health problems. I loved his singing. He had a lot of power and depth in his voice. My prayers go out to his loved ones. He certainly will be missed.......Carson

The guy had brass balls handed down from Buddy Holly. He played what was in his soul, and told Nashville to shove it if they didn't like it. He proved them and Chet Atkins WRONG. I will drink heavily in his honor this weekend at my gig, and play my balls off! Balls to the wall! Let it flow! God bless his

Waylon was my idol going all the way back
to sixties when as a teenager I discovered his records at the local Kmart. I guess that's why I'm partial to his early pre-outlaw RCA recordings. This was'nt my dad's
country music ! His sound was so different
from anything in country at the time (electric dobros and harmonicas, vox organs).
And of course that bad-ass, slicked back,
patent leather hair !

I have Waylon's box set from the RCA years which is top notch music in my book. I've loved his music since the 60's when a band I was in started doing his version of "Stop the World and Let Me Off". It wasn't he first cut of that tune but it had so much more drive than the others. So many of us can identify with his song "I've Always Been Crazy". Waylon would take the rock things and make 'em country such as Neil Young's "Are You Ready for the Country". When they made him, they surely threw away the mold, a genuine American treasure.

The bass player who died in the camper accident was Chuck Allen who many of us old LA pickers knew very well. He was one helluva bass player/vocalist. To bad he had to die so young.

I read the bio in the paper and heard the media reports. What was left out was any mention of that incredible voice of his! Wow!
There are plenty of macho sounding "down home" vocalists coming out of N-ville today but Waylon was someone who didn't have to fake anything. He had "it" without really trying. A most natural singer with a great resonant voice. No fake accent or style, just the real guy. Other great ones will come along but never another quite like him.

I Think I must have been in the 4th or 5th grade, went to my 1st memorable concert. WAYLON. He was then touring with with The Crickets as the opening act. He came out and sang a few tunes with them also. I was in total awe of the man's voice, playing, and stage presence. Plus Moon on steel. I will miss him greatly. It seems like all the good ones a fading fast.

I'll bet he's pickin with Buddy up there right now.

Waylon was no doubt a true legend who plowed a lot of new ground in country music. He never broke under the pressure of the record executives and created a style that would have never existed without him. I have always respected him for this because there are very few superstars who are playing the kind of music they really want to play.

Waylon's talent, voice and attitude toward music wil be missed!!

Waylon once told Chet Atkins when Chet threatened to sing, " Hoss, if you see something getting smaller, it will be me leaving." I'll always remember his sense of humor, as well as his support when he featured Ralph Mooney on steel guitar.

I had the pleasure of meeting Waylon in the tune-up room when I played in St. Louis in '83 and he was there to help induct Moon into the Hall of Fame. Also opened up for him in '92 in 5 dates in western Canada. He pretty well kept to himself as he was trying to be a good boy, healthwise.
