Recording tape to files or Cd's

I need some info. When I record my old tunes on cassette to Wav files on my computer hard drive.

How should I set my volume on the Tape Machine so that it isn't too loud for the Computer to handle.

I got a lot of old cassettes and reel to reel copies and would like to burn them to CD"s before the tapes self destruct from old age.......al

I haven't done this (yet) but I think the preferred way is to use the line out into an adjustable preamp, then to the computer. If you must use the headphone jack, keep the volume down to keep from overloading the computer input.

Al & Jim, when I've done this, there is a VU
meter on the software program that allows you to monitor your volume level & get it set before you start recording. Set it so the peaks don't distort. One of the forumites
suggested www.polderbitS.com . It separates the tracks for you & saves time. You don't have to do each tune by itself to be able to
select the tune you want to play back when you put it on a CD from your HD.

I recently purchased a program from Office Depot called 'Cakewalk' Pyro and it does all that Doug speaks of. I found that I had to run my player volume way low and then turn my computer speakers wide open to hear it effectively. Also a word of caution, at least from the Cakewalk program standpoint---it's very easy to want to down load it too loudly. You'll be surprised at the amount of volume that will be on the CD after burning it. Incidently, this program has a "tag" program with it called Media Face II that prints labels and box sleeves (although I haven't mastered it yet)

I have put my old stuff on mini disc MD.I Think these are the best thing ever invented you can put each song on a track for repeated play or repeat a intro or run , verse any part can be played over and over just by hitting the A button where you want it to start and the B button where you want it to stop.This is a great learning tool I wish it had caught on better.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Scott Howard on 24 May 2002 at 06:51 PM.]</p></FONT>
