recording to CD

I finally got a CD RW , now what? I took a CD R disc and recorded 2 backup songs on it. Then later in another time, I tried to do another one on the same CD. It said no Room, put in another CD. I just wanted to add the third one to the other two. I thought it would just record on the next space. Do I have to fill the CD all in one session? Or? That's only the first problem...al

Hi Al,

It sounds like the software you used was set up to 'finalize' the session. (so that no more songs can be added) There should be a setting or mode of recording to disc that allows you to leave it 'open till you close it', which would allow you to continue adding songs to the cd until it was 'full', at which point you tell the software to 'close' the disc. I might be able to give specifics if you can tell me what software you are using to record to cd. It should be do-able.

I don't think you will be able to play your CD on a regular player unless you close it after burning, in which case you can no longer add anything else to it. You have to use a new CD once you have closed it.

Make sure the MEDIA (blank CD's) you bought are CD-RW format instead of just CD-R. You need to have that, otherwise there won't be any way for the computer to add or delete files from this disk. Also, make sure your software is set up to something on the order or "do not finalize CD." If it's set to finalize the CD, it will burn off the rest of the CD and you won't be able to add anything.

Michael,
With all respect, I must dissagree. Many boom boxes and stereos can't read CD-RW media. In fact, some burnware will warn you of this if you try to use a CD-RW for audio.

It is true that you can't erase CD-R's, but you can certainly add to them. I do it all the time. With Nero, which I am currently using, for a 'data' CD, choose 'multi-session.' For an audio CD, just un-check 'Finalize.' (as you all suggested)

Thanks guys for all your help. I just got a new computer and the software that came with it. Windows XP home edition. It must be setup to finalize. I'll check into that. If I get something, I'll let you know how I made out. Thanks again....al

Al I know when I got my CD burner it said if I closed the "session" I could'nt add more tracks.....however if the "session" was left open I could'nt play it in my cd player.
Therefore you need to fill and complete the CD before you can play it......JOHN

Sorry, Tommy. I misunderstood the problem. I didn't know about the RW problem with boom-boxes either. The multi-session hadn't occurred to me at the time. Sorry about that, Al.
