saving pictures?

Post by Ernie Renn »

Occasionally, I see a picture I want to save. Until recently a jpg saved as a jpg. Now it's saving a jpg as a bmp. How can I fix this? Did something get changed? (My daughter, who is 2 3/4 gets caught using the computer. It probably has to do with file associations, but I haven't even thought about that stuff for a couple of years. Any ideas?
It's not that big of a deal, but slows down the process and it never used to be that way.
Thanks for any help!

I think the computer is simply remembering the last settings you (or your daughter Image)used when you last saved a picture.

I assume you're talking about saving pictures from the Internet. Right click the picture, select "Save Picture As...", and change "Save as type:" from .BMP to .JPG. I'm pretty sure once you've done this once, it will remember your preference from then on out.

Jim;
I don't have any other options. Just bmp. To my knowledge, I've never saed anything as a bmp before. At least not on purpose.
The images saved properly before...
I don't get it now...

What browser are you using? I get the option with IE 6.0. Try changing the extension to .JPG by hand, maybe that will work. Image

IE 5.5
It just started doing it about a week ago. Before that it would save it in whatever format it was on the web.
Very confusing to me...

Hmm, I'm at work now and tried it with IE 5.5 on NT and am getting the same thing as you, even when Properties shows it to be JPEG file. Putting .JPG on the file still saves it as a BMP. Now I'm confused too, what is Microsloth doing to us? Image

I just tried a couple of known .jpg's on my web site and it would let me save them as .jpg or .bmp, but the .jpg was the default "save as".

Jack, are you using IE 5.5? IE 6 at home gives me the choice of saving as .JPG or .BMP.

Now this is really weird. In IE 5.5 I just right clicked on a .GIF file and had the option to save as .GIF or .BMP. Tried another JPG and this time got the option to save as .JPG or .BMP! more Image

I guess it depends on the graphic. I just tried it on a couple of Forum graphics. It worked fine. Boy, am I confused now...
BTW: Is IE6 something I should be downloading? Is it more stable now? It's large download, but if it's a lot better...

Ernie, yes by all means download IE 6 as there are other things which it brings with it that are "improvements" such as Outlook Express 6.0. But concerning the photo right click thing, thats in IE 5 as well..I would get 6.0 and see what happens after it configures.

When IE does this it usually means that it has run out oof drive space.

Just delete Temporary internet files.
