XMS manager

Post by Joe Delaronde »

On bootup I get the following message;

EMM386 not installed - XMS manager not present.

Farther down the screen;
Memory management not detected.

Windows boots up but some programs don't work right.

EMM386.exe is located in the Windows directory and is a Dos prog. Should I run it?

Is it safe to reinstall 98 over the existing version. I uninstalled some programs and I think a mem file left with them.

EMM386, which is the memory manager program for the older OS's is located in the Config.sys file that is run a boot up. If you have a backup copy on the drive, may be labeled config.bak you may be able to recover by replacing the config.sys with the .bak file. Rename the config.sys to something else like config.old and then rename the config.bak to config.sys and then reboot and see what happens.

You may have to go to DOS to do this. The DOS command to rename is "ren", e.g. ren config.sys config.old

Jack
Used the MSCONFIG command and brought up config.sys. The "apply" tab was open so I clicked on it. Backed out, booted up & Bingo!!
Thanks for your help.
