modem dialtones
When I dialout to the Internet on my W98 PC, my speakers blast out the modem dialtones. Once, I found a check box somewhere which was supposed to stop this happening (it didn't).
Is there an AT string to do this or is there some other way ?

The AT command for volume level is L1, L2 or L3. I don't remember which one is the lowest volume setting. I find it convenient to hear the modem dial, connection etc. If you have them shut off and you don't get a connect you have no idea what happened, no dial tone, the modem at the other end didn't answer, etc.

You have to turn down the sound 2 places in Windows. The first is in control panel/modem/modem properties - pull the slider all the way down.
The second is in your dialup connection itself / open My Computer/dialup networking - find "Your connection name" - rightclick on it, and go to properties. Then click on the configure button. You have another set of modem settings there. If either of these is turned up, you will get sound when you dial.
Hope this helps.

Hey Mick--I'm not sure if I'm covering the same area as others here--
on my task bar there is an audio mixing panel I can bring up (sound cardrelated, I guess). It has optional modules for Overall, Wave, Synth, CD, Mic, Modem. I can mute the modem here, I think, without muting the internal speaker. You can go to "options" here to bring up Modem if it's not already on the panel.
