Virus

Post by Dan Dowd »

I just finished re installing windows me after I was hit with the W32BLEBLA.B.WORM. Norton antivirus cought it however it destroyed my windows program and wouln not allow running programs and gave the message,"file not found". I could not reinstall windows from the CD drive as it could'nt find the files it needed to run it. Had to use the startup disk then reinstall. It was gut wrenching to say the least. The file that had the virus was SYSRNJ.EXE. I also had a W32SIRCAM.WORM which came from a file from the Mid Atlantic Steel Guitar Assoc.DOC.Z13. I hope the people responsible for these viruses burn in hell. This has taken all afternoon and part of the evening to repair this damage, not to mention the strain worrying about loosing all my data. I am lucky this time. I need to contact Norton to see why their program did not prevent this.
[This message was edited by Dan Dowd on 07 September 2001 at 09:16 AM.]

I also had trouble with sircam32 not picked up by Norton or VET.
I think it is fixed now from a free program from WWW.cyberwizards.com.au.Go to the virus info link.

I used to be a lot more active in the anti-virus community than I am now, and I can tell you that at least from a historical perspective both Norton and McAfee have terrible reputations. Dr. Solomon used to be my product of choice, but since they were acquired by McAffee they too have gone downhill.

I am currently running PC-Cillin on all my machines here and have changed over a couple of my clients to it as well. Their updates are quick and the product seems to do as well as any.

I am about to start testing Panda here at the house. I've heard good things about them and am interested. It doesn't hurt that they have their US office about 1/2 hour driving time from me.

I didnt mention in my 1st post to make sure you have a current boot disk. The dog ate mine(HA, I'm ashamed to admit I didnt have one)and I tried to use one from someone elses computer and it would not work. Luckilly I just installed Windows ME on my lap top and I was able to make a start up disk from it that worked. If it wasnt for this luck, I would have lost my entire C drive. I now have a start up disk and am keeping it in a safe place. When it comes to virus's there are them that have and them that will.

Dan, make sure you have the Windows startup diskette and the Norton "rescue disks". You may have been able to recover with just the Norton rescue disks, as they are also bootable and have the antivirus, etc on the diskette set. It takes 5 floppies, on my PC, to make the rescue disk set.
