Any Netscape 6.1 users here?

Post by erik »

I downloaded it yesterday. I like the layout and the functions better than IE, but i find it moves slower and i keep getting "illegal errors" which force me to close the browser. I also get freeze-ups which require me to push my computer reset. Is this common? Is it because i have IE in my system too? Might it work better if i delete IE?

I downloaded 6.0 onto my Mac and my work PC many months ago. The version was so full of overbearing bells and whistles as well as advertising traps that I deleted it and went back to 4.7. Someday 4.7 will stop working for some reason and I'll have to upgrade, but I'll hang tight until then.

Erik, it sounds like you may need to do some house cleaning on your system. You will probably also need to do a defrag.

You shouldn't be having these problems, with either browzer.

I run IE6, and have never had a prob. with the browzer. I don't like Netscape, but it's only a personal preference, as Netscape is a good browzer.

You may also try loading up the Opera Browzer. It's FREE, and can be found at www.opera.com.
I keep Opera as an alternative.

I too prefer Internet Explorer over Netscape. I've used both and like C Allen just a personal preference.

BTW, the "final" version of I.E. 6 is now available.

If you are having problems it's probably because of conflicts from various browsers and media players you have. The more browsers and media players you install on your PC the greater the potential for a problem. Even if you uninstall a program there is still potential for something it leaves behind, or reconfigured, to cause problems.

I'm probably a lot more conservative than many PC users as I don't have any file sharing programs and don't have any 3rd party media players, except RA8, etc but I have very few software problems too.

You should not have any problems. Try running scandisk, exit windows and reboot the computer. If that procedure does not fix the problem, uninstall NS 6.1, download it again and reinstall it with all other programs closed and not running including your anti-virus software and especially any other browser.

IE 5.5+ does not like NS style plugin callouts. It seems to want active-x only.

I have IE 5.5, NS 3, NS 4.78, Opera 5, and NS 6.1 all running happily on my machine. I used NS 4.7+ to download NS 6.0 preview version originally.

As a side note I re-wrote most all of our websites to run on NS 6+.

It was a major pain. Image

Just curious, do any of you who run multiple browsers have them in different partitions? Do you have Windows with NS in one, and Windows with IE in another? Or all in one boot?

I haven't had time to partition my HD. I should, though as I'm running a 30gig in this machine. I have another HD that I put in every once in a while, but it generally stays on my experiment computer.

But the answer to you question is no.
I run different browsers on just this drive.

I only have the big 3. IE-6; Netscape-6; and Opera.

I prefer IE-6, as I've said before. The phone company prefers Netscape. (They provide my DSL service.) And Opera is fast and light, and will work when the other 2 "hang" for what ever reason that they do.

It's not necessary. However, be aware that you can only have one functional copy of IE on any machine, regardless of partitions, thanks to MS' lovely "integration" of the browser with the OS.

John, you are a glutton for punishment. But I admire your work ethic Image
[This message was edited by Jeff Agnew on 06 September 2001 at 07:05 AM.]
