I've never used the "Smilies" option on my posts but I can see where they could occasionally help clarify a comment.

Question: I just tried to use one for the first time and failed. What am I missing...how is it done?

Gene,
Try lower case o instead of upper case.

Gene, click on the forum help and it has a section on adding smiles, frowns, etc.
