Is The Verdict In? 5.5 or 6.0 IE?

Post by Chip Fossa »

Actually, I've been trying to access, lately,
MSN's upgrade site and have been having all kinds of problems getting thru.

What is with these idiots? They are the ones,
supposedly, who invented this mess, and they have the worse site for accessing. Right?!?

So is it OK, once I get thru, to upgrade to 6.0 or stay where I am at 5.5?

Oh yeah....although I have "superfast" AT&T
Roadrunner cable connection, when it comes to email [Outlook Express], Roadrunner fails miserably. About half the time, I get an error flag saying that my IP could not make the connection........so what it usually takes is to reboot. Oh Joy! $45/mnth for this
crapola.......give me a break. Anyone else
experiencing this?

Chip, since I moved I went to Time Warner's Roadrunner service. It sucks. At times it works great but other times it's as slow or slower than dial-up. Right now, it's extremely slow or no access at all and been that way for two days. All they will say is "network engineers are investigating". I never had this problem before with DSL.

Being a retired Network Manager and a hardware help desk manager I would say it's a capacity problem within the Roadrunner service. If I could get DSL I'd switch back in a minute. I might even go back to slow dial-up - that's how much I like this Roadrunner service.

As far as your problems, it's all with the ISP. A different s/w version isn't going to fix ISP problems.

Unlike C Allen, I generally avoid Beta versions of software unless it is strictly for evaluation. Having spent 40 years in computers - both as a programmer, hardware and as a systems engineer (I used to be Novell certified) we would never release Beta software to the users.

Thanks Jack, and C Allen.
I'm thinking seiously now about canning
RoadRunner, too, and going back to the old
56K dial-up ISP. I don't mind paying the
outrageous $45/mnth, but the performance is terrible......you're right......at times it looks as tho I'm using the old dial-up connection. Maybe AT&T should rename their
internet cable program to RoadCrawler.

Chip Roadrunner cable is owned by Time Warner, not AT&T.

Are you accessing AT&T through RoadRunner? Or do you have AT&T cable and accessing it that way??

Jack,
My monthly bill from AT&T Broadband
includes the TV cable fee, plus an internet
cable access fee. With taxes an all, it is
now up around $100/mnth for these 2 things.
Basic [no HBO, SHO etc] cable TV, and crummy
Roadrunner internet service.

Sorry to gripe, but in this case, I feel what you get, for the cost, is just pitifully
crummy.

Chip
I had major trouble getting to the windows update site, when I running IE-5.5. In fact I had MAJOR trouble with anything I tried to do with IE-5.5. (That's not to say that it doesn't work for other folks.)

Every prob. I had was corrected the second I was up and running with IE-6

If you're on cable, it should download very quickly, and install the same. Heck, if you don't like it, just re-install, IE-5 (Not IE-5.5)

C Allen, thanks again, good friend. If I
could even get to MSN's update site, I may just download 6.0. I figure, with this
lousy cable internet service, now, I've got nothing to lose; and I am well aware of 'beta' problems, as Jack has mentioned.

However, I am about to make a move, shortly
here, and get rid of Roadrunner; and go back to my old dial-up, 'MAP'. But, I just went out to their site, and they are now offering DSL, which might be in my area, and for $49.95/mnth....about what I pay for Roadrunner now, so I have to investigate further. Thanks again C Allen...will let everyone know what happens, when it does. CF

Chip, you can only get DSL if you are within 18000 ft from the Telco central office and there are no repeaters in your telephone line.

They advertise DSL service but they fail to mention there are certain restrictions.

Go to www.dslreports.com and check your phone line to see if it is DSL eligible.

I'm still confused with your "AT&T Cable" and Road Runner service since they are provided by two different cable companies.

Chip, you can get the browser at ZDnet, or Cnet. I would go to CNET, as ZDnet has changed their site around a little, and I find it a little harder to navigate it.

After you get that, I would suggest that you update everything on your system, through DEVICE MANAGER. But one thing at a time. Go get IE-6, first.

Now, although IE-6 is still officialy a "beta" it IS in final release. It's finished.

Yes Jack,
I'm now looking right at the large folder the cable tech gave me when he came to my
trailer to hook up the modem.
The bill for services definietly comes thru
AT&T Broadband; as does my television. The TV
costs about $32/mnth and the internet service
is $45 and change/mnth. I'm gonna send you the homepage for 'MAP', my old dial-up IP,
to your email. They now offer DSL. I'm aware of the proximity problem. There are 3 towns that
border Monson [where I reside]: Palmer, Wilbraham, and Ware. 'MAP' has DSL services
in these 3 towns, and I may be just be within
one of those zones.
Tried yesterday to talk with someone at MAP, but the person in charge was out. See what you think about what they have to offer.
Thanks, Jack.
