Pictures on AOL

Post by Dan Dowd »

I have tried to send pictures (JPG) to folks at AOL. They dont get them or can't open them. I have sent them from IE in the body of the email and as file attachments. I have sent them to myself and it works fine. Is there a secret to AOL.

Dan,
I always have a problem sending just about
anything to a friend who has AOHell.
I think it's fairly recognized that AOL conflicts with just about everything that isn't AOL.

For some reason AOL'ers can only receive one picture per email. Either only send one picture per email or zip multiple ones together into one zip file.

For AOL users, you kind of have to make it in HTML because their mail is HTML based. I load the pictures to the net and send them links to them or link them to their mail page. See below.
You have to use the "<a href" and "/>" things or the "Image", but it works fine for me. (If the stuff inside the quotes doesn't show up, click on the little pencil to see what's there.)
(It didn't show up, so click the pencil to see what I put in!)

I think there is also a size limit on e-mails. I don't recall what the max is, but it's been mentioned before.

I have found with AOL if you send pics and no text they will go through ok. Then send another email explaining what the pics are.

I tried just sending the pictures with no text but that didnt work either. I sent 2 pictures a while back and somehow AOL zipped them. Then I had to explain to that person how to unzip them after first having them download winzip.

What am I doing wrong? Image I have had AOL for almost 5 yrs. Never had a problem sending or receiving pics on AOL except when they were "Zipped". Being virtually 100% computer illiterate, I did not know how to unzip "zipped" files because I did not even know what "zipped" meant.

My dear friend and fellow forumite Bob Farlow put me onto some "unzipping" software.

Once I did that I could unzip them easily.

But I do have a problem that NO body seems to be able to help me with.

I have NEVER been able to read a file sent to me, ending in .doc or .txt.

I have tried everything I know. I do NOT have microsoft word. And "note pad" or any other software I have opens the file with nothing but wierd characters all over the pages. I do have a word processor called Lotus AmiPro and a a spreadsheed by Lotus 123, but neither of these will read .doc or .txt files.

Help!!!!!!! Image

Carl,

Try using either Windows Write or WordPad to open your .DOC or .TXT files. It does a pretty good job of converting the files. A link to either program should be found in your Program Files > Accessories menu.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to spring for a copy of Micro$oft Office. You may be able to find an earlier version cheaper now that Office XP is coming out.

Brad thanks, neither helps me. So I guess I am going to have to purchase some software that my computer apparently does not have to allow me to read the subject files. Thanks for the info,

Many of the .DOC files are MSWord files. The standard Windows supplied text programs will not handle MSWord files. MSWord is a WordProcessor program and is used by the majority of buisnesses except the legal profession that uses WordPerfect.

Carl, I suggest you get Microsoft Home Essentials package. It includes MSWord plus MSWorks and several other programs packaged together and is cheaper than buying MSWord by it'self. I've seen it at Sam's Wholesale Club and at places such as BestBuy.

You can download a free reader from the microsoft website for MSWord (.doc) files. They also have free readers for Excel & Power Point files.

Hey Carl I found the viewer to open Word doc. for guys like us who don't have the Microsoft Word...and don't neccesarily want to buy it. This is a freeware and here is the link right to the download page pal.
