Need webspace?
http://www.crosswinds.net
It's free! It's unlimited!
It works! (as opposed to NBCI).
$5 a month gives you FTP (didn't use to be that way until people were abusing the free FTP) and gets rid of the pop-up ads.
You can even get a free Re-Direct URL here:
http://www.xroad.com
of the format
http://thewilkinsons.xroad.com (which is my nwe site, BTW)
For some money, you can have a "real URL" without the .xroad.com in it, if you like.
This redirect allows you to later change the actual URL of your website, while keeping the URL you give to people the same.

How much space do they give you? Do they limit the bandwidth?
Many Internet providers include some free web space as part of the package. People don't realize this. If you're comfortable with FTP, ask your service provider first. The answer might be a pleasant surprise.
For the first 2 years or so of the Forum, we used the "free" web space that came with my Internet account. 20 MB of FTP-able space was included with my $19.95/month dial-up account.

The space is unlimited, and I don't think they cap bandwith (though there's obviously some sort of physical limitation due to their connection to the internet, etc).
My site doesn't get that much traffic (maybe 20 hits a day, with about 200 per day being the max).
My cable provider gives us a whopping 5 MB of personal space. Though a friend did tell me they'd increase it if you ask. I'm not sure they'd want to give me a few hundred MB, though (I'm using over 150 now, I think). Although, disk-space is very cheap. Heck, for $100, I could buy them 30 GB worth of space. (Well, if it's SCSI, only 9 GB for maybe $200).
I should ask them about that.
The other option was to setup a Linux server at home, going through my cable-router. I'd have to change the redirect site every time I'm assigned a new IP (which shouldn't be that often).
Technically, I think I'd be in violation of the terms-of-service agreeement, though. Although with my bandwith requirements, they'd probably never even notice the traffic.

David,
If you want to follow that option, one service you may wish to investigate is dynamic DNS. There is a free service available from the folks at dynDNS.org, which has certain restrictions. You can also use a paid service, which is generally unrestricted.<SMALL>The other option was to setup a Linux server at home, going through my cable-router.
