BIAB to SR-16

Post by Don Sulesky »

I was wondering if anyone has tried downloading a midi rhythm file from BIAB to the SR-16.
The SR-16 says you can input files to it.
If so, the BIAB has some I like but don't know how to go about it.
Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know anything about the SR-16 but BIAB files themselves are not midi. BIAB does have a button on it, though, to convert the BIAB file into midi and I think it will give you the option to either save it separately as a midi file on your hard drive, or just put the file on your virtual clipboard. If you put it on your clipboard, you should be able to do a "paste" function in the next application (like SR-16, hopefully) and it will bring in the file. Otherwise, save it to disk and then open SR-16 and do whatever you need to do to "open" a midi file on your hard drive, regardless of whether it was originally a BIAB file or not before it became a midi file. Hope this helps.

Jim, the Alesis SR-16 is a standalone drum machine - not a software package. But it does have MIDI I/O on it and it is supposed to have the capability to download MIDI drum files to it.

However, it looks like it can be done but in a convoluted way. Save the BIAB song as a midi file. Use something like Cakewalk and load the midi file. Mute everything except the drum track and then use a sysex program, such as Midi-Ox (which integrates with Cakewalk) to output it to the Alesis SR-16. I don't know if it will work but in theory it should.

Don is coming by today (we're going fishing) but afterwards if were capable of doing any computer work we may try my theory.

I was able to load my User files today into Jack's Alesis SR-16 by way of a midi cable.
It went smoothly.
I'll try converting the BIAB files to midi and try what Jack said today about the Cakewalk program I have.
It's worth a try.
Thanks,
Don

The Alesis SR16 only recognizes 12 notes. They are!
Alesis-Pad Name--- Gen.Midi---Midi-Note-M-Key
Kick -------- Bass-Drum -- 036 - C1
Snare------ Acoustic-Snare-- 038 --D1
Claps ----- Hand-Clap-------039 ----D#1
Tom-3------ Lo-Floor-Tom---- 041----F1
Closed-Hat----- Closed-Hi-Hat---042 ---F#1
Tom-2------ Lo-Tom---- 045 ---A1
Open-Hat---- Open-H -Hat----046---A#1
Tom 1---- Hi-Mid-Tom ---048---C2
Crash--- Cras -Cymbal---049---C#2
Ride---- Ride-Cymbal-1 ---051 ---D#2
Perc-1---- Hi-Timbale---065---F3
Perc-2---- Hi-Agogo----067---G3
You will have to assign these numbers to make it compatible with Cakewalk or BIAB. Also, set the Aleslis to these settings:
Midi Output Settings Set to
Midi Ch ------- 10
Drum In ------- On V1
Drum Out------- On
Clock In------- On
Clock Out------ Off
This is for Cakewalk to Play SR16. Also if the sync does not work, close out Cakewalk and reload and try again. I don't know why this is but sometimes that's what it takes on mine.

Thanks Fred,
I'll give these a try.
First I have to read up on my Cakewalk software.
I bought it, loaded it in my computer and said,
"You know, BIAB does all this for me so I never used it."

Don, I only used mine this way a couple of times, and things worked good, but I decided to buy a Roland JV1010 sound module because it is far superior to the SR16 for drum sounds, and there are a lot of different type of sounds available. The biggest problem with the SR16 is the lack of good brush sounds and that is true of BIAB and lower end sound cards too. One of the big advantages of using Cakewalk to drive the SR16 is the ability to slow down passages for endings etc.
