CD-R Problem

Post by Kenny Davis »

I recorded a song from a stereo reel-to-reel to my computer using my usual settings on Cool Edit 96. Recorded at 44100/16 bit stereo as usual, but when I attempt to record to cd I get a message saying "will not be added because it isn't cd quality." What's up with that? I'm pretty sure I used two mics (albeit 30 years ago!) and everything else checks out - wav file & all. I've got other cuts off the same tape that went OK, but this has me baffled. I'm using Adaptec 3.5c - Any ideas???

There's nothing wrong with the original recording. The software could care less what kind of recording or how it was originally recorded.

The message, apparently, has to do with the format it was "recorded" on the PC. You say you used your normal settings to record, so I'd say try re-recording it and see what happens.

I Think the frequencey is either above or below what is required for a CD. Have you tried recording first as an MP3 file and then burning onto a CD. Do you have the software Adaptec's Spin Doctor. I used this for an old NAt King Kole album with no problems I even converted the mono to stero. I have had problems with Adaptecs software. Have you tried Nero you can get a trial version from www.nero.com

Sounds like the software isn't seeing the WAV file as 44.1 kHz stereo. Maybe the file is corrupted.

Or maybe the error message is wrong, and there isn't enough space in your TEMP directory to hold the file.

First of all, thanks to Jack for the e-mail discussions, and thanks to Fiona & Bobby for the responses. I've been too busy lately to mess with this, or to even check this thread.

I have discovered something else...When checking the "details" on the properties of these files, it does say "This file is invalid or corrupted", and when I attempt to preview the file from that box, it says "All wave devices that can play files in this format are in use, Try again when a wave device is free". There wasn't any wave player open at the time.

Bobby - I checked my folders, and one is 1.10GB and the other is 519MB. Nothing in the smaller one plays, and two in the large one won't play. They all play in Cool Edit, but I'm having problems getting them to play in my Play Center (Creative) or work in Adaptec.

Fiona - They all show to be recorded cd quality, and one of the files was ripped from a cd. I haven't ever used the software you mentioned, or I haven't tried making a mp3 first.

I did talk to Creative's technical hotline the other day, but since all my other files work in Play Center, he thinks that Cool Edit must have crapped out on me. Maybe what I related in this post might help you guys help me! I do just fine as long as things go good, but not too well when it gets a little out of my league! - Thanks
