Flickering

Post by John O Keeffe »

I have noticed lately that every time I click on something on my desktop ,just before it opens the screen flickers, and the colours go.This is only for a split second and once the programme opens its fine.
Colour settings seem to be fine.

John, your graphics card might be causing the problem.... but I don't really know a way to troubleshoot it. Maybe Jack does...

It could be the graphics card or it could be the Direct X needs updating (there is a new version 8.0 just out). Most of the newer video cards have built in diagnostics. You can access most cards via the "display properties". RIGHT click on any blank area on your desktop screen and then LEFT click on properties. The "Display Properties" screen will come up. Select "Settings" and then "Advanced" and many video display models will come up with another screen that has various settings and diagnostics.

In the "Advanced" settings if there is a "restore default settings" or something similar click on that and then see how the operation is.

Another option is to uninstall the video and let windows reintall it. Sometimes that refreshes the video and drivers and cures some intermittent or flakey problems.

Another option is to reinstall the video drivers.

That's a common side effect of running in "256 colors" video mode. To get rid of the flicker, right click on the Windows desktop and select "Properties", then go to the "Settings" tab. Under "Color Palette", change your setting to "65536 colors" or "True Color".
