BACK" click echo

All of a sudden, as of late, when I click
on "BACK" in upper left corner, my indication
sound has developed an echo/repeat quick-
descending quality.
Anyone have a clue as to what's happening
here? It's like something's stuck, and then it quick releases.
Appreciate any help.

If you don't have any mouse trouble, then the problem really isn't a "problem"--it is a sound Internet Explorer plays each time the browser begins to navigate to a different site. To confirm this, do the following:

[*]Go to Control Panel.
[*]Open up the "Sounds" applet.
[*]Scroll down carefully until you find an item that says "Start Navigation."

If there is a speaker next to it, then that is what the 'problem' is.

I have noticed that, depending on what operating system and Internet Explorer version you have, the sound will play once or twice. On my dad's computer it plays twice. On mine, it only plays once. I don't know if you can call it a glitch or not, but it is there. If it is annoying you, then here is how you can delete it:

[*]Do the steps above.
[*]Click on the item that says Start Navigation. You will see a few things change.
[*]You will see a list box that will have the text "START.WAV" or someting like that. Click on it.
[*]Scroll all the way up the list to find the "(none)" option. Click on it. Then click OK to close the applet.

This should have gotten rid of the sound. If not, then please check back and I'll put on my thinking cap again...

Jonathan,
I found "Start Navigation", and there was
no speaker next to it.
I'm aware that you have options to change the 'sound' of some pc moves, or 'no sound'
as well.
Upon furthur investigation in 'Sounds Properties', "Complete Navigation" does have
a speaker next to it and it's sound is
CHIMES.WAV.
Chimes.wav is the sound I get when BACK is
clicked; but after the sound starts to fade,
an echo takes place. It should die right off,
but does not, and trails away.
The speaker system is BOSTON ACOUSTICS. Last
night I was playing some music through REAL PLAYER and that ECHOING happened while this
was running.
So I probably got bigger problems than just
the click BACK echo.
Thanks for the tips, however.

Cairo...I upgraded to a 16MB 'Voodoo 3000'.
This Voodoo has been installed for quite a few months now; and this echoing started about a week ago. (???)

IRQ's are tuners for push-pulls'

Actually they are internal PC Interrupt Request lines. Devices use a certain IRQ address line to communicate with the CPU. If there was a conflict, two could be using the same IRQ and interferring with each other.

Go to My Computer and RIGHT click on it and then LEFT click on Properties. Then Click on Device Manager. If there is a conflict or a device that is not operating properly you will see a round yellow icon with an apostrophe inside the yellow circle. If there are no yellow's then everything is probably working correctly, as far as windows is concerned.

If there is a problem, windows help has a conflict resolution routine to help you try to correct the problem.

Yeah...I checked out everything listed in Device Manager and all seems as it should be
and NO yellow warning signals.

It's just a thought, but I know my soundcard has several "environmental" sound effect settings on it. Perhaps your's has some type of delay/echo setting turned on in your sound card??? I know it's unlikely, since it doesn't do it on everything...but it wouldn't hurt to check I guess.

I know it's a long shot but,Have you tried reloading "Windows" ????

I had a problem such as you discribe and after reloading over the existing "windows",the problem did a Houdini act and went "Poof" !!

Do NOT remove the existing "Windows" O/S but just put the CD in and click on the "Install" button.

Even if this dosen't fix your problem, it won't hurt the computer. Remember, you are not eraseing or deleteing any files (DLL's, etc,etc,) just rewriting the ones that are already there, hopefully the one that is curupted will be clean up in this process.

This has worked for me in several cases when I have down-loaded a file that diddled with a video or sound card driver.

Bill, are you sure they'll be no bugaboos
by just overwritng? One time, I had to call
up Gateway and they walked me thru an entire REBOOT job. So I lost everything on that one.
But as we were reinstalling everything, a
few 'error' windows popped up now and then, and said that certain files couldn't be found on the WIN98CD.
So I'm leery about this CD. Can you take it to some compute-tech place and have them check the CD out...to see if it is corrupted etc.?
Sounds like the thing to do, Bill, but I better have this WIN98CD confirmed, before I
send it into neverneverland.

Yesterday, I was exiting the internet and doing something else at the same time and got the "echo" or interrupted logoff sound I get with Earthlink. I have a 350Mhz PII with 128mb memory and a SB AWE64 sound card. Even with that fast a CPU it can still happen periodically just from what is happening at the time.

I really wouldn't worry about it, as it appears it doesn't do it all the time. Probably like mine just occasionally and just depending on what is happening.

One thing to remember, although it appears the PC is only doing one thing, it's actually doing many things and the fact it has to spread the CPU time over the many tasks involved it could cause an apparent audio breakup or "echo" as one of the consequences of the multi-tasking. As it's playing an audio sound, a higher priority Interrupt may take CPU time away from the audio board (which probably has a lower or shared Interrupt line).

Chip, I tried to find some info on ur Soundcard but couldn't find anything. U indicated it was a 16MB Voodoo soundcard, so is there a bank of sounds avail on the card? If so, could there be an echo program toggled within it? Do u get an echo when U record?

Jack...yeah, this is now the very way that the pc is acting. I'm not going to fuss about it either.
Cairo...I've been trying to dig up the lit
that came with Voodoo and haven't located it yet. Is there some place on the pc where it
lists all the details of the soundcard? I
could go there and get back to you on that.

PS-Been on the pc for about 40 minutes
now and heard the echo only twice. Right now
all seems as it should be.

Chip-Go to start/Find/FilesFolders/ and type in the name of ur Soundcard. If there's any info, that should find it. It's usually in C:\Windows or C:\Program Files if C is ur Hard Drive. U could also do a search on the web using the name/mfgr/model# of ur soundcard.

No, It will not hurt your machine to load "Windows" over itself.

That will only fix the curupted files there, if there are any.

info. I know I'll run into it sooner or later.

Right now, I got more problems. My HP
printer/faxer/scanner has pulled a 180
on me. Got paper jammed in it, and pulled it out....thru the back [the feeding side].

There were 4 or 5 sheets all in there.So now the dumb driver-drum that sends
the paper into the machine is now turning in REVERSE...actually pushing the paper up and out.
How did this happen, he wants to know?
