Need recommendation for home CD changer

My home CD changer component has died. Funeral will be soon. Am looking for a replacement. Old one had 6 CDs in a cartridge that stacked them vertically, rather than in a lazy-susan type that spins around. I like the cartridge better. Not looking for high end stuff. $100-$200 ought to do it. Any recommendations?

I have grown very fond of my IPOD. I have an outboard USB hard drive I have tranferred all my favorite CDs to. I drop them into my ipod and can take 1000 + tunes in my shirt pocket anywhere. I use a fm transmitter in the car, a dock at home, a usb wire at the office and a stereo cable from the headphone out to my mixer for practice.

Thanks, Bo, but I really do want a component piece. If I get an iPod, it will be missing most of the time when I want it. Someone will have left it in their car, jacket pocket, taken it to the mall, whatever. So, it's got to be a component. Thanks anyway.

Jim,I use my DVD player...I can watch movies and also play music through the stereo...

Jim I think you are talking about a simple straight forward CD player without all the BS, and you are like me, you like the old Pioneer Magazine Cartridge players. Yes they still make them, and the magazines. My little pioneer comes with a remote, and it is very simple to use. And it will hook up right with your presnt stereo system. $149 comes with remote and one magazine. Also i found goobs of the magazines on ebay for 3 bucks a piece, i use to have to chase my daughter down, she was useing my magazines for CD cases. Here's the link..i hope this helps Jim

John, good suggestion, but our TV (where we keep the DVD player, and our stereo, are on opposite sides of the living room and I don't want to string long wires all around. Check out Zzounds on the internet ! I have a Sony that is four years old I purchased from them . It is a 5 disk " Lazy suzen" component C.D and has given me great service ! I use it practically every day .

I bought all my components from them ! Their packing is something to behold --very safe from destruction /damage . They also do not charge any s/ tax when shipping to Texas .

Can the CD player component affect the sound? We picked up an inexpensive (off-brand) lazy-susan type CD player yesterday and my wife and son both say that the sound is 'less warm and full' than with the previous CD player. I must say, I can't hear the difference. I thought all sound quality would come from the speakers (unchanged) but not fromt the CD reader/player itself. Can it be true?

I have a Sony DVD/CD combo that has the 6 disc platter that sounds good, and I have used it for about 5 years without any problems. I also have a Carver single disc that sounds a little better (warmer). Old, but good quaility. I don't know much about the real high end players, but Panasonic also makes very reliable players in my experience.

Jim,
I have JBL shelf speakers and I cannot tell any sound / tone difference . I also use gold plated patch cables in everything I have ! Maybe that could be the difference !

Lefty's post makes me wonder whether the newer components might be even more 'digital' than the older stuff, i.e., the older ones have more audio distortion (aka 'warmth'), in which case anything I get now would sound less warm than my older player? Make any sense to you?

I bought a 200 CD player from Musicians Friend a few years ago (6 or 7) and only gave 129.00 for it. I think it might have been a close out due to those kind of CD changers not being so popular since MP3 players. But you might check with them. It was called a CD Juke box

I use to keep it loaded up with over 100 Cd's and either play them in order or it had a random play feature too. When it said random it really meant it too. It didn't just play one CD then switch randomly to another it would change CD's after a song or 2 if you set it up that way and it could drop a CD in the slot in less than 3 seconds. It actually looked like it might have had 3 or 4 play heads and that's how it kept them coming so quick.

I have my collection all on my computer now (90 gb) and play it over my wireless connection thru my router. That way I can listen to my collection that's out in my studio in the house when I want.

If I still had the changer I would gladly give it to you but when my son took it over after I cataloged all of my CD's it only lasted about 3 months and he had it all jammed up and we just pitched it
