delay unit
Hello! I'm the new kid on the block today, having Just received my ok from Bob. I have enjoyed your articles and impressed with your ability to share knowledge with other steel players. I want to add a delay unit and would appreciate comments on a unit that work well with a steel. I have heard that a standard guitar delay will not perform well on a steel. Thanks for your reply.

Johnny, Welcome. If you go to the Electronics section and do a Search (top of the page) and check out delay units, you will get a ton on info on the subject. I personally am using the Boss DD3 unit. Again, search for DD3 and you will find the settings used by top pros.
Good hunting.

I am using a Line6 DL4, has a ton of delay models, features and looping for about $225. Way better than anything else I've run across and I have been an effects freak since the late 70's.

The SIB "Mr. Echo" is the transistor version of their more expensive EchoDrive. Both are xcellent boxes. Same echo circuit, very analog sounding. Probably the best "analog" delay for the money, about $130. SIB stuff is great. I'd also highly recommend the Mr. Echo. The dry signal path is true analog, the delay is analog emulation. That way you never digitize your pure signal.

Welcome.
The Boss DD3 will do a fine job.
The latest is a DD6. This one does some more tricks. More is not always better.
Check BOSS website for features.
In my experience, the BOSS units eat batteries with the gusto of a hound dog. I prefer to run the unit with a good battery and a 9v dc line.
Hope this helps.

Hey Johnny, welcome aboard.
I don't know why anyone would tell you that a Guitar delay pedal would not work for Steel..
They are both Guitars..are they not ?
For a long period of time I had been using an Ibanez stomp box DE7. Bought it for $25 in a Pawn shop..It is a fine unit with lots of flexibilty and control.
The past year I have been using a Peavey Profex, one of the originals. Bought this at Atomic Music in DC for $60..the primary reason I switched over to the rack mount unit was that I was getting tired of changing the battery in the Ibanez stomp box DE7 pedal and I did not want to add a WALLWART to the mix for this pedal...
The PROFEX also has the saving grace Headphones out jack with separate volume control...thats worth the $60 I paid all by itself....
Good luck and have fun..

Bobbe Seymour told me that he asked Wanda Vick, when she was heading to a recording session, why she was taking the DD-3 instead of some expensive rack gear that she had. She said, it sounds better! Bobbe agreed, so that is a pretty solid vote for a DD-3. I had one before my Lexicon rack unit and I liked it just fine. Get the AC adapter unless your family owns a battery factory.

The reason that some guitar effects have trouble with steel guitars is that the pickup output from steels is a lot more powerful than from even a humbucking-equipped six-string. Some effects can handle it, some effects overload at their first input stage, producing that fascinating crackly tortured-transistor distortion - not too musical. If a DD-3 works, use it. If you're stuck on using a particular guitar effect with steel that freaks that way, you can attenuate the steel signal with another box - those little 6 or 7 band EQs work well for this.

Two of my favorites:
1. The discontinued Ibanez "Sound Tank" EM-5 Echomachine. It's a digital delay stompbox that sounds more like an analog - warm, smooth, and "big" sounding. Getting harder to find - I'm going to buy a backup.
2. The H&K Replex. This is a tube unit that is the closest thing to tape deal (without tape) I've ever found. Even has a vintage knob to introduce wow, flutter and tape hiss into the signal like an Echoplex that needs service!. Includes a great tube signal boost and a passable reverb section (unfirtunately can't be used with the delay section). Not cheap, but my overall favorite.
