Ever try this tuning?

Post by Jerry Hayes R.I.P. »

I've been using a tuning on my lap steel and Dobro for a long time and I wondered if anyone had tried it. I call it a G6th although that's probably not right. It goes like this, low to high: B D E G B D. You can play the majority of Dobro licks with this except you don't have the normal low G on string 6. I don't really miss it as there's too many other benefits. You can retune 2 strings (the high D to E) and the third string (G to G#) and you have an E7 tuning (B D E G# B E) for stuff like Steel Guitar Rag, Roadside Rag, and with some Fuzz you can do some Duane Allman slide stuff on the lapsteel. I've been thinking of putting a couple of Keith/Scruggs tuners on strings 1 and 3 for quick tuning changes in a live situation.

It's G6 and there is nothing new about it. Steel players have been using it for many years, primarily on DOBRO and/or NATIONAL TriCones.

It's also the same intervals, but one tone lower, as the top 6 strings of the A6 tuning used by Herb Remington and many others. And the same intervals, but 5 frets lower, as the top 6 strings of the C6 tuning with a high G as used by Junior Brown and innumerable others...
