Drew Glackin

Post by Dave Van Allen »

Saturday night Last Train Home got to share a bill with Tandy, a great band from NYC. Playing with them is a multi-instrumentalist named Drew Glackin (mandolin, guitar, lap steel)

Drew also plays bass and lap steel with another NYC band, the Silos.

He has a distinctive style, playin' clean or dirty, and, atypical of some roots/ americana lap pickers I've heard, he plays well in tune with incredibly accurate slants.
and he's an incredibly nice fellow...

Just wanted to let y'all know bout this fine picker, if you didn't already Image

I met Drew about two years ago. Can't really say that I've heard him play but he certainly is a very personable guy.

I was checking out the classifieds at the Mike Auldridge site and saw an ad stating that there were about 60 or 70 Dobros for sale. I also noticed a NYC phone # and so I called and got Drew. He and his buddy had bought these Dobros from the estate of a player/collector in the Ct. area who had passed away. Well, I went to Drew's apartment and when I walked through the door, I thought that I was in Dobro heaven!
There were Dobros and cases strewn all around. Dobros on the couches,on the beds, in the kitchen, on the floor, leaning on the walls, laying on tables and chairs. You couldn't swing a dead cat without hitting some kind of Dobro. Then the cleaning lady arrived. There was absolutely no "non Dobro" area to clean! I was laughing my you know what off!
There were all kinds of resos, Regals, OMI, Houndog, RQ Jones, some Nationals and in all kinds of conditions from all kinds of years. Needless to say, I had a ball. Drew showed me his particular tuning where he does a lot of string pulls behind the bar. Drew was a gentleman and was pleasant to negotiate with. I ended up buying a 1990 OMI 8 string and a Bobby Wolf custom mahagony.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.......

I was admiring the mother of toilet seat lap steel he was playin, and he indicated he had "four more of 'em at home"... I gather he's quite the instrument collector/dealer/swap kinda guy... and he plays good too!
he really does perform acurate pulls behind he bar...
he described his tuning like a G chord on a guitar... so what is that bottom to top...
open guitar is eadgbe so
gbdgbd? heck that's a dobro tuning...

maybe he meant g barre chord ...
I dunno..<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Dave Van Allen on 29 November 2001 at 01:31 PM.]</p></FONT>
