Post by Dave Zirbel »

Has anyone tried these Canadian made pickups?

If so, what are you opinions?

Well, I ended up buying one without hearing it first. I'm pretty pleased with the sound of it through a PA. It doesn't sound good through a steel amp or an electric guitar amp. I'd like to hear it through an acoustic instrument amp. It costed $150. It does not require phantom power or a pre-amp. I'll be trying it out at a gig this weekend. DZ

Be sure to let us know how it does at the gig. Are you playing with a full band? Electric band w/drums? I'd like to know how it stands up to the test of stage amplification.

I'll be with a full band with drums, fiddle, upright bass and guitar player that does not use overdrive. I may run a mic along with my pickup just for kicks. I'll let you know what happens.

interesting what dave says about PA vs Amp tone. i use (i'm a very limited dobro player) a lace sensor stick-on-the-top dobro pickup which is alot cheaper and also sounds great through a PA but not quite so pleasant through an amp.

I was considering a Lace Sensor but I found the Schatten at a store in my town and didn't feel like doing the mail order thing. No one in the Bay Area had the Lace Dobro pickups.

So Chris, does the Lace bring out any of the true acoustic qualities of the instrument or is a synthisized deal like the Match-Bro?

dave, i've got no clue how it works since the sensor process is slightly different from a magnetic pickup, but through a PA and also through my bandit at a medium volume with the tone set right, it really sounds like an acoustic dobro. through my steel amps at volume without resetting tone, it's got that thin tinny non-dobro ugliness.i doubt that it's any better than the pickup you've got, which is new to me. yours can probably be set eventually to where it really works out great.

I'm not sure if the Schatten passed the test. Half the band showed up drunk and the drummer was playing loud in retaliation. Image I tried it on half a song and went back to steel for the rest of the evening. Maybe a better monitor mix would have helped.
Time to get a Match-Bro?

I use the Sensor, but only in tandem with a mic. It doesn't have any acoustic properties. But if you combine it with a Beta 98, the tone is fat, warm and round (if you like that kind of thing).

I run them both at the same level. The mic sounds good alone, but a little thin. The pickup adds alot of warmth and sustain. Also, it adds alot of feedback protection.
