Al Brumley -- Just Curious

Post by Richard Sinkler »

I'm watching the Wilburn Brothers show right now and Al Brumley is a guest. Is he related to Tom Brumley? Looks like they could be related.

If it is Albert E. Brumley, writer of many gospel songs, it is his father. If it is Albert, Jr. it would be his brother. Albert Brumley wrote hundreds, if not thousands, of songs. Somewhat related, I have asked Tom several times to record an album of his dad's songs. I grew up playing them and I would really love to hear his arrangements. I have some cassettes Albert Jr. cut several years ago that feature Tom on steel. They are fantastic.

I was fortunate enough to be on one of Al Jr.s sessions of his father's songs. We had Tom fly in from California where he was working with Ricky Nelson and play on it. Tom played great. This was back in the seventies. Al Brumley Jr. is still alive and kicking here in the Ozarks. I did a "radio entertainers" reunion with him back in the summer. He holds this reunion once or twice a year in Asbury, Missouri at the home of Landon Hale who is the father of singer Jeannie Bryant and song writer Nadine Bryant. The Bryant brothers married the Hale sisters. Hale yes! I think Al is planning another reunion in the spring. I talked to Tom at the Baldknobbers Steel show in Branson this past summer and he said he's going to try to make one of the reunions. It would be great to pick with him again.

I saw that show, it was Al Jr, brother of Tom. I had forgotten what a good singer he was. Great to hear him again. What a talented family.

I remember seeing John Hartford perform solo in the 70s.

Before he did the song, Turn Your Radio On, he introduced it by saying, "Here's a song written by the father of Ricky Nelson's Steel Guitar player."

I played guitar and drums on 2 Haggard cds
that featured Al Jr. He even went on a couple of road dates with us. Merle really likes him.

The Hag & Al go way back !

From The article on Herb Henson

" His inaugural cast of Mize, Woods, Johnny Cuviello and Carlton Ellis was soon fortified with several performers from the Clover Club and elsewhere, people like Bonnie Owens, Lewis Talley, Fuzzy Owen, Al Brumley, Roy Nichols and Dallas Frazier. His list of guest stars over the years reads like a Music Row telephone book: Ernest Tubb, Tex Ritter, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Merle Travis, Johnny Cash, Gene Autry, Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell, Spade Cooley, Dan “Hoss Cartwright” Blocker, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and, toward the end, a very young Barbara Mandrell. Unlikely performers like Rudy Vallee, Lawrence Welk and the Lennon Sisters also showed up. "

How about "Jack" Brumley, Tom's brother that has not been mentioned herein. Is he a brother to Tom?
