Chet Atkins

Post by Jody Carver »

Can anyone tell me what label Chet recorded "Canned Heat" I know it was his first recording, there may be a later one on R.C.A Victor, but I know the first version was recorded back in 1947, I Do have Chets singing Money Marbles and Chalk. Anyone, Donny? Ray Montee?

Thanks

Jody,

It was recorded August 11, 1947 in Chicago, produced by Stephen Sholes.

Musicians:

Chet Atkins - Guitar
George Warren Barnes - Guitar
Harold Siegel - Bass
Charles Hurta - Fiddle
Augie Klein - Accordeon

Recorded for RCA, Master number D7-VB-0782. Originally released as "Chet Atkins & His Colorado Mountain Boys" RCA 20-2472 (with "I Know My Baby Loves Me In her Own Peculiar Way) on the flip side.

Kind Regards, Walter

How about "Telling My Troubles To My Old Guitar".

His career started with Steve Shoales and RCA wanting him to be a counterpart to Merle Travis at Columbia Records. They found out pretty quick that Chet could not compete with his main influence Merle as a singer but things were a little bit different when it came to holding his own as an instrumental guitar artist!

Bobby, check out a tune that Chet was the arranger and leader on RCA records which is now part of the Bear Family and check to see if you can hear "Lookin Around" with Elton Britt.

Is Chet's "I Know My Baby Loves Me In her Own Peculiar Way" the same song Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers (Hot Rize) did? I'd love to hear Chet's version.

Yes Paul, it's the same song. It's has been recorded by Earnest Tubb a few times and Leon McAuliffe also did a great recording of it.

Money, Marbles and Chalk

Money, Marbles and Chalk
(Pop Eckler)

There's an old saying that's been all around
I heard before I could walk
How some's got wealth and some's got health
Others money, marbles and chalk

CHORUS
I've got money, marbles and chalk sweetheart
But I still feel like I am poor
For my money won't spend and my marbles won't roll
And my chalk it won't write anymore

While you were here I was happy and gay
Your presence made me for another one day
But you left me for another one day
Now I feel so alone in a crowd

* Refrain

Money, marbles and chalk is alright
For a miser who loves only gold
But give me a chance to save our romance
For I love you with all of my soul

* Refrain

I walk in the rain and I feel no pain,
I'm lost and I'm lonely and blue.
I can't sleep at night and nothing seems right
And I worry a lot about you.

* Refrain
[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 14 November 2006 at 09:11 AM.]

Donny, thank you. Many should read those lyrics and realize there is more to life than
money. Thank you good friend.
