Piano Jazz on PBS

Post by Jerry Overstreet »

For those of you with interest and may be unawares, there is a PBS program called Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewis or something close to that. It's been airing here in Ky on Thurs. nites for a while. Comes on at 9 or 10 p.m.?

Tonite's program featured Dave Brubeck and Billy Taylor. I missed Mr. Brubeck's solo set. Image Billy Taylor did a great rendition of All the Things You Are and they teamed up for a tremendous performance of Ellington/Strayhorn's Take the A Train. Nice mellow melodies with such tasteful improvising.

I was so impressed with the respect these 2 showed each other, one comping changes allowing the other freedom to stretch out, then switching roles back and forth. The epitome of professionalism. No contests, no volume wars, no trying to outdo each other. Just making music.

The guitar is my favorite instrument to hear jazz played on, but the piano ain't bad either under the right hands! Anybody else seen this program?

I've watched them in St. Louis. Last Friday was Keb Mo and Robert Cray. A B3 one was a couple weeks ago with Joey Defrancesco and another guy. This is a great series! JP

Thanks for the heads-up Jim. I hope I haven't missed the Joey De or the Cray programs. I love the Hammond. Joey is a hoss. Mr. Jim Pugh with the Cray band is a monster B3 picker too.

The Austin PBS affiliate (KLRU) is not airing this series. Image
What a shame, it looks like a great series. The episode, called "Killer B's", with Joey De Francesco also featured Dr. Lonnie Smith (whom, I believe, has done some excellent recording for Rounder Records on Johnny Adams sessions).

Here's a link to the series' webpage: http://www.legendsofjazz.net/television/index_html

Keep on pickin'!

On the killer B's segment, Smith played really cool and mellow, opposite of J.D. When they played together, Joey blasted as always, Smith layed back and then just for a few measures did a typical Joey blast, it was too cool! JP
