The album is a self-produced home-recorded masterpiece. The sounds range from lush arrangements and brass accompaniment to stripped-down ditties on the ukelele. She plays all the string section parts and most of the other instruments as well. Most importantly, these are just great songs. The first track "We Didn't Bother", might be one of my favorite songs ever. You can watch the video on her website or myspace page.
The album mixes island-flavored folk, bossa nova, classical and hokum jazz effortlessly and organically. It's the best thing I've heard in a very long time. My ears haven't perked up like this for a new artist since Gillian Welch. As a huge Brian Wilson fan, the album reminds me of Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile (two very different-sounding records)... the funny thing is, Rebecca hasn't been influenced by any of that.
The disc is on a tiny label, so you probably won't find it at your local record shop... but she is on iTunes, etc. Do yourself a favor and order a copy or 3. You won't be sorry!
I have the privelege to play my 8-string dobro on the tour. We'll be out there for 6 weeks, so come out and say hi and dig some real quality music from this mega-talented chick. Chelsea Chason on upright bass is about as tasty as it gets too.
