Joe Pass on YouTube

The Stunning Virtuosity of Joe Pass
Be sure to read all the comments on this first clip. Hilarious, especially the one about "Little Wing". But notice that for a lot of these obviously younger commenters it's their first exposure to Pass, and most of them love it. I find that encouraging.

All The Things You Are
Simply sublime.

Finally, Pass and Oscar. Masters of their craft at the height of their powers. Poorly mixed but still worth it:

Thanks, Jeff. Outstanding. I've got a half dozen guitars at home and all the notes I have on them put together doesn't even compare to the notes Joe Pass has on one.

I've always enjoyed Pass's playing immensely - especially solo. The All THe Things clip is sublime!

For my taste, though I'm no fan of Herb Ellis, he was a better match with Oscar than Joe was. Going head-to-head with Oscar in full-out, weeny single note bebop mode, almost anyone would seem to get run over by the Peterson freight train. Ellis at least has an earthy bluesiness that for me, worked better. Reminds me of Ben Webster with Art Tatum. There was no way he could match the sheer density of Tatum's approach so very cannily, he lay back and used his beautiful breathy tone to improvise very simply. The contrast was stunning.

This is the kind of music that I really like. I'm pleased that you like it also.
