Right on Merle!!! Now there's a guy I can respect. When the subject of winning a Lifetime Achievement Award came up, he said, "We did," not, "I did." That speaks a lot about his humility...he knows he didn't get to where he is by himself. And he's not afraid to speak the truth as he sees it about the Chicks, even though it runs cross grain to the modern country radio status quo. Good for you, Merle. Good article on another rebel who did it his way on the Left Coast of the USA.

Bound to be closed... but for the moment.

Bravo Merle, for talking straight
and speaking his mind.

AND a country music icon,
defending others speaking THEIR minds.

Hag :
"I don’t know what’s new about girls not liking war, first of all.
And second of all, they have a right to say what they want to."

Since when do OUR free speach rights
stop at OUR national borders??
For some it's fine, until you
disagree with them, I guess.

As far as I am concerned I vote in the USA,
I pay taxes in the USA,
and am a citizen of the USA.
My free speach rights about the USA extend world wide.
If the LOCAL government doesn't stop me talking.

I pay my taxes,
I reserve the right to have input
on how they are spent.

On the other hand I AM respectful of my host country's feelings,
and limit critisism to some extent.
Like any good house guest in your home.

I wouldn't assume I have the same right
to brutally straight talk on ALL subjects,
vis a vis my host country,
that I still have relative to the USA,
over here, or in Europe.

If it isn't sedition and treason,
(trying to bring down the government,
as opposed to changing it legally)

it is legal speach on USA soil,
and by extention anywhere else too
for a USA citizen.
Our brave armed services men and women
have fought for this right for us ALL.
Not just those we agree with...

Of course this thread is pre-ordained to closure.
As with most all Chicks threads... Even if Lloyd is the theme.

But not because of free speach or disagreement with any others position,
or mine, or Hag's,
But because it is inapporpiate usage of forum space,
leading to social-ploitical food fights...
(I plead guilty)

Back to their music :

Are they good?

Hag :
"Sure they are! I mean, three girls and they all play instruments
and they all sing in key? That’s a phenomenon."

He looks at them for what they are; good musician's.
And honest, non-kow towing people.
That's how I look at them too.

Merle Haggard :
Never afraid to buck a trend to conformity.
And he defends your right to disagree with him too.
Ain't that one of the reasons we like him so much?

He said it, and that's good enough for me.

Isn't Merle a treasure?

He's my all-time favourite country singer, and now he's gone up even further in my estimation.

What album is 'Politically Uncorrect' on - Merle's or Gretchen's?

Well, Merle must be anti-American, and anti-George Bush, and he's an absolute HERETIC, since he sided with the Dixie Chicks. Image
How many of you anti-Chick bashers are gonna come out against Merle, the greatest country songwriter of our time?
Merle, you did it again---Gave me one more reason to idolize you!!!!

Roger, "Politically Uncorrect" is on Gretchen Wilson's new CD "All Jacked Up".

As far as Hag and the Dixie Chicks, I'm just glad someone is not afraid to call it like they see it.

Good Read, thanks for the post...

Well I think MH would like the chicks regardless. Duh.

"So honey.. Armed Robbery, meth lab, killed your ex? Al Queda cell member?... What's your sign?.."

There's a difference between liking what somebody sings and writes and modelling our lives after them.

I don't expect a lot politically or intellectually out of actors, musicians, or artists. Especially the Laws of Physics..

A blind pig can find truffles. Their noses just get a little sorer..

Right on Merle!

Overheard on the bus..

"Yeah honey, It's TOTAL BS. The whole Haliburton thing and 500 measley nerve gas warheads. Hell I drank more poisonous Pruno™ than that when I was in the joint the third time. I can't believe how stupid one ex-governor, oilman, drunken preppy draft dodging fighter pilot, and two term president can be. He was never even in solitary confinement. Hell, I'm even embarrassed that I stole a car with a Texas license plate on it.

You got enough George Dickel? Yeah, I know that name...

Hey. I wrote a song about it awhile back. It explains the whole thing. Let's see, where is it.... Oh, its over here behind the couch.. Aargh.. I can't reach it.. Oh could you Nat?

Its wayyy down behind. Jeez you've got long arms.. Yeah... A little farther..

Woops..."

(muffled sounds....)..

Yup.

"Hag on the Dixie Chicks."

One by one..

I hope we're not. I'm praying that there are some young people watching the whole sorry scene that are smarter than we were.

The Resistance Movement to the War on Islamic Militancy has some pretty strange bedfellows if you'll excuse the pun.

Maybe they think they wouldn't get their heads cut off if they hate Haliburton enough..

I thought this thread was about Merle Haggard's comments about the Dixie Chicks. Once again it's turning into a political rant thread... Just like in the recent past we couldn't even have a thread about Lloyd Maines (his great steel playing, NOT his daughter) here without somebody saying something that guarantees the thread will be closed (and seemingly taking pleasure in making sure a discussion about the actual topic can't continue).

So, back to Hag... I personally think he's being the same Merle Haggard I've always loved and respected even when I didn't agree; saying what's on his mind and not being willing to fit anybody's stereotypes about his politics...

So, be honest all you "right" leaning Hag fans (and some of you are old friends): how many of you will let this change your opinion of him? I'm honestly curious, not trying to goad anybody, just be interested to know...
[This message was edited by Pete Finney on 26 June 2006 at 07:17 AM.]

It's unfair that by violating the Forum Rules we agreed on, an individual can cause a otherwise interesting thread to be locked.

Pete Finney stated my view exactly.
