In numbers, the intro is

4, 4#dim, 1, 6, 2, 5, 1

We hosted a SG Hall of Fame fundraising show two years ago and our lead picker was Ray Riggs, who had worked for Tex Williams. Herby Wallace was on the show and did this song but before he started he commented "I better get this right with Ray Riggs here". Another side note, I posted a couple of songs from Ray's guitar instrumental album on the forum about a week ago. He is a super picker. Ray was probably later as I'd say he is "60ish". But, Ray also worked for Red Foley, probably around the same time in his career.

Jack
Bob McCollum was over today and I
ask him if he knew Ray Riggs ! He said
that he didn't ! But what surprised me was
the stories he told about Ralph Moony ! I ask
if he would write it all down and shear them
here on the Forum .

That would be fun !! A time warp for sure .

Ralph ! if you read this ! Bob says howdy !
you may have to go back to the 40's to
remember this guy , something about joining
the union ( musicians )

I used to play this in Paris reguarly.
Fun tune.

Coincidentally 2 days ago I put it on a cd for our singer, in hopes he will try it.

Ya ! Jodys cords do work good ,
Have you tried using the 6 minor ? in
place of the 7th that Jody listed , off the
1 !

1 1 1 1 1 1 6m 6m 4 4#dim etc.

maybe that would be wrong but the flavor seem
OK !

Hay Jody
I'm not sure I said the above correctly ,
But there seems to be a nice cord flow on
the steel with the minor passing in the progression
not sure this would work for the back up .

Thanks again for your help

As with many standard tunes this one has a verse that is never played....I found a sheet music version if anyone is ineterested (email me for a PDF version).
"I keep dreamin' of my mammy and my pappy in the wintertime gloom etc etc.." (Jerry Livingstone, Abner Silver,Mitchel Parish -1938). According to the sheet Fats Waller recorded it in 1938 (Victor #25762) before Bob Wills in 1946...etc.

Sounds like some lap steel guitar in the beginning!

Very interesting to hear the Fats Waller rendition.

Some considerable differences in the chord changes from the way western swing bands generally play it, notably in the third line of each half of the tune.

Thanks, Wil, for posting that link.

Wha' thu'... ?????

Waller with Steel? Something seems fishy: why does the steel disappear after the into?

Great new way to think of the song.
